
Antigua and Barbuda’s Fire Department welcomed the introduction of two fire trucks to its quarters. To honor the addition of the vehicles to the Fire Department, a brief handing over ceremony was held at the St. John’s Fire Station on 02nd March, 2020 at 10:00 am. The gathering of hierarchy officials, members of staff of the Fire Department and media representatives gave the event a well-supported and successful outcome. Present were the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Public Safety and Labour, the Honorable Steadroy Benjamin along with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Safety and Labour Ms. Stacey Gregg-Paige; Mr. Atlee Rodney, Commissioner of Police and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Fire Mr. Elvis Weaver along with other officials and members of staff were also present.
The handing over ceremony was initiated by a brief word of prayer which was followed by an opening address from Minister Benjamin, who expressed how satisfied he was with the work of the Ministry of Public Safety for the perseverance and continued effort invested in sourcing the fire vehicles which were bought from a company in the UK. Noting that the Permanent Secretary has been the driving force behind this initiative, Minister Benjamin also encouraged officers at the Fire Department to keep up the good work and stated that he understands the importance of the Fire Department to our nation and commended them for the impressive job that they have been doing in effort to keep our country safe. Minister Benjamin also stated that this is just the beginning of the great works that are in store for the Fire Department and reassured the department that it will be receiving more fire vehicles to allow the department to operate effectively.
In a speech delivered by Commissioner of Police Mr. Atlee Rodney, Commissioner Rodney thanked the government for the timely donation to the Fire Department and stated that the vehicles will be properly cared for and maintained.
The All Saints Fire Station will benefit from this initiative as one of the fire vehicles have been allotted to that station. Officers from the All Saints Fire Department who were present at the handing-over ceremony expressed great joy in receiving this donation and drove away with contentment in the newly handed over fire vehicle.
The two vehicles which are Angloco Ltd., England Branded are equipped with foam, a substance which plays a pivotal role in fighting fires, the trucks are known to be very durable and reliable, and these were specifically designed for the purpose of fire fighting in any environment.
