Filthy police station cells reportedly cleaned

The Minister of Legal Affairs has reported to the Cabinet that industrial cleaners went into the cells at the St. John’s Police Station on Newgate Street and cleaned the holding cells there.

We have not been able to independently verify that the cells have been cleaned and if they have, to what extent.

The government admitted that many persons who had been detained or arrested were forced into cells that were in substandard.

In March, gross and shocking images emerged from inside the holding cells which led to outrage among both detainees and residents who were appalled and disgusted by the conditions.

Cabinet reported today that a proposal to include a urinal and a WC bowl in the back of each cell and to create an opening for clean air to enter the cells was accepted.

It said the Ministry of Health will oversee the installation in order to allow for superior conditions in the cells.
