Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez has highlighted the growing need for additional hotel accommodations in Antigua and Barbuda, citing record-high visitor arrivals and strong demand for rooms.
Speaking on Pointe FM, Fernandez noted that many hotels are operating at full capacity, with some visitors struggling to secure accommodations.
He pointed out that even airline crews have faced challenges in finding available rooms, underscoring the strength of the country’s tourism rebound.
“The demand for hotel rooms is outpacing supply, which presents a strong case for further investment in the hospitality sector,” Fernandez said.
He stated that the government is encouraging both local and international investors to explore opportunities for new hotel developments and expansions.
The minister attributed the surge in arrivals to increased airlift, targeted marketing campaigns, and the return of major events that have drawn more tourists to the island.
He also noted that the strong winter season has contributed to higher occupancy rates, with many properties seeing full bookings weeks in advance.
Industry stakeholders have echoed Fernandez’s concerns, with the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA) acknowledging the need for more accommodations to sustain growth.
The government continues to focus on attracting investment in the sector, with several new hotel projects already in development.
Tourism officials are assessing ways to enhance infrastructure and visitor experiences to maintain Antigua and Barbuda’s appeal as a premier Caribbean destination.

Focus on supporting locals to promote the bed and breakfast type accommodations. No more big hotels that take all the money out of the country. I’ve visited countries where no large hotels are allowed and the country thrived because all of the local population benefited directly from tourism, there was no poverty or feeling of disempowerment by the native people. Also there is nothing wrong with limiting the number of tourists that visit if it does not benefit the country. Let visitors feel lucky that they get to come. Push more ecotourism and watch the whole country transform. Time to think out the box and really invest in Antiguans who are smart, resourceful and hard working and who actually care about Antigua and not just extracting our resources
