As Antigua and Barbuda experiences shifts in global economic conditions, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Charles Fernandez has emphasized the resilience of the high-end tourism sector in the face of potential tariff challenges.
Speaking at a tourism press conference, Fernandez noted that while economic uncertainties and trade policies could impact the travel industry, Antigua and Barbuda’s position as a high-end destination provides a buffer against external shocks.
He stressed that affluent travelers are less likely to cut back on luxury travel, ensuring a steady flow of visitors despite global economic fluctuations.
“The advantage of positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a high-end destination is that this market segment remains relatively stable even in uncertain times,” Fernandez stated.
“We have worked hard to develop a product that attracts visitors willing to invest in premium experiences, and this has allowed us to maintain strong tourism performance.”
Fernandez highlighted that in 2024, Antigua and Barbuda surpassed its previous record set in 2019, with a 10% increase in stayover visitors.
He attributed this success to strategic marketing efforts, infrastructure investments, and strong partnerships with industry stakeholders.
He also addressed concerns regarding potential tariff increases in key source markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom, which could affect discretionary spending and travel decisions.
However, he reiterated confidence in Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism industry, emphasizing that the destination’s focus on luxury and unique experiences sets it apart from competitors.
“Our continued investment in high-quality accommodations, service excellence, and immersive cultural experiences ensures that we remain attractive to discerning travelers.
We are actively working with our hotel partners and other stakeholders to sustain our growth momentum,” Fernandez said.
With air travel and regional connectivity expanding, Fernandez reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the tourism sector through continuous investment and collaboration.
He noted that upcoming luxury developments, including new hotel properties and exclusive resort experiences, would further solidify Antigua and Barbuda’s standing as a premier Caribbean destination.
Despite global economic headwinds, Fernandez expressed optimism that Antigua and Barbuda’s strategic approach to tourism would enable the country to navigate challenges while continuing to thrive in the competitive market.
