FAREWELL ASOT……..by Audley Phillip
I write this piece with the deepest respect, honour, heartfelt grief and a sense of great loss at the passing of Asot Michael.
Asot was a remarkable human being. It is almost impossible to write about him in the past tense because I still cannot come to grips with him not being around.
He filled every room that he walked into with so much life and exuberance. Even as we mourn his passing, we are comforted by the many times he brought comfort and joy into the heart and lives of others..
More than a source of laughter and joy, Asot was a pillar of support for many. He supported many persons within his St. Peters Constituency and wider afield.
Time spent in the presence of Asot was always fun. He loved partying and he was always the light and life of any party that he attended. Though he loved a good party, when it was time to get serious, few people could hold a more intellectually stimulating conversation than him. He was an outstanding orator and writer as well.
Asot was consistent. The same values he lived by as a family man governed his business dealings. He was a hard worker and a strong and tough negotiator and he was uniquely skilled at bargaining.
Asot elected to answer the call to serve his country and abandoned his comfortable family life. He really did not need a job as he and his family were prosperous and powerful.
His death was quite a price to pay for one who was so dedicated to serve. He was a true loyalist in every sense of the word. Many of us have lost a great friend while Antigua and Barbuda have lost a true patriot.
Asot was a family man. He dearly loved his family. He was a loving dad and special brother to his two wonderful sisters. He loved and cherished the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party and even when he was discarded as a Minister under circumstances that he considered unjust, biased, discriminatory and prejudicial, he chose to remain Independent rather than switching parties. He was a die hard Labour man to the core, though he is going to his grave believing that he was unjustly treated by the party he worked so hard to help. He had the remarkable feat of being the only person in Antigua’s history to run as an independent and win handsomely.
As this day descends upon the land, may the Comforter, the Holy Spirit grant peace and comfort to his family and everyone who is in mourning
Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12:3
May you rest in peace and love and Shalom.
With Love, Respect & Honour your name would be mentioned in the halls of Antigua & Barbuda for generations to come.
