Janine Smithers, the family member of Chris, a Canadian murdered in Antigua in March 2022, is demanding justice after the shocking release of his killer, Nathaniel Berle Wallace Jr. Janine is outraged by the Antigua justice system’s failure to convict Wallace, who fatally stabbed Chris after an argument.

Witnesses confirm Wallace fled the scene, only to return with a knife, suggesting premeditation.

“The facts are clear—Wallace returned to the scene with a weapon. This was not self-defense,” Janine stated. Despite Wallace admitting to the crime, key evidence, including crime scene photos, was lost, and critical witness testimonies were undermined.

The trial, which took nearly three years to reach, ended with the judge ruling that the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence to prove intent. The defense’s “No Case Submission” was upheld, and Wallace was released from jail on February 5th.

“How can there be no evidence of intent? Wallace stabbed Chris knowing he could kill him,” Janine said, calling for a manslaughter charge at the very least.

Janine is now calling on the public to join her in demanding a fair trial. She plans to contact Antigua’s Attorney General and other officials, urging them to revisit the case and ensure Wallace faces justice.

She also hopes the media will raise awareness, pressuring the justice system to act and protect Antiguans from a dangerous individual with a violent history, including a prior deportation from the Virgin Islands.

“We will not rest until we get justice for Chris,” Janine concluded.

  1. Not good for tourism. If this gets out. The tile will be. Careful of the murderer who was set free with a lengthy violent record.

  3. I understand and feel the grief, hurt and disappointment of the family members to this verdict. If a no case submission is made in court and upheld by the judge, the matter generally cannot be taken any further in the current proceedings as it signifies that the prosecution has not presented enough evidence to warrant a trial resulting in the case being dismissed in favour of the defendant.
However, depending on the jurisdiction and specific circumstances, an appeal can be filed to challenge the judges decision in that no case submission. Gonna require significant and substantial resources in order to do so.

  4. I will certainly join in any formal protest against our questionable judicial system in Antigua. There was a case not too long ago involving a young man and his uncle. Following the initial altercation, the young man left the scene and returned with a weapon and assaulted and killed his uncle. The boy was found guilty of manslaughter and sent to jail. Though it was revealed during the trial that it was the uncle who initiated the tussle, it was argued then, that the fact that the young man left to retrieve the weapon used to kill his uncle, PROVED INTENT. How the hell is this case different? Mr. Attorney General, again I implore you to conduct a serious investigation of what goes on right under your nose with an incompetent DPP and a seemingly corrupt police.
force. That killer should never have been freed for the reasons given. Shameful!

  5. I fully understand tge pain, hurt and grief of the family. However justice is not the expected result of a grieving party. Justice is the end result of a fair trial by a competent court of a person who is believed to have done wrong. So if at the end of a fair trial the accused was acquired that’s justice. If he is convicted that justice. It is not the desired result of any party. The family of the accused will be saying that justice has been served while the family of the deceased is crying out. If the result was the other way around the family of the accused would be saying that justice was not done while the family of the deceased would be praising the system. Let us therefore accept the result of a competent counrt and see it as justice.

  6. “Key evidence, including crime scene photo’s were lost, and critical witness testimonies were undermined”

Let that sink in for you fellow Antiguan’s, let that sink in.
I’ve never seen such a small country, have more murders walking around freely, like Antigua, never.

More missing people, and unsolved murders under this inept government watered down immigration and judicial system.

Meanwhile, you have a government bragging about how much money they raked in, and such a wonderful job they are doing.. no laughing matter, but many a scratching their heads at this point, begging for justice for their love ones.

My sympathy goes out to this family for the lost of their family, and for all the other families who are still looking for their missing love ones.

  7. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE! KNOW JUSTICE, KNOW PEACE! I personally knew Christopher (AKA Chris) Smithers for 8 years from 2014 to 2022. We both had bodybuilding and fitness in common so we quickly became bonded as very good friends and kept in regular contact. Over the years he was able to share alot of good nutritional advice with his expert knowledge in sports nutrition. When he got his Antiguan citizenship it was like Christmas day to him. He loved Antigua as if his navel string was buried there. That accused was the one who provoked Chris which unfortunately led to his death. I hear people talking “bull s#!t” about how “they heard Chris was the initiator which is a stinking lie!. The accused first knocked the drink out of Chtis’s hand which led to the heated confrontation. The accused was always jealous of Chris from day one because Chris was very popular with many local Antiguan young women who were attracted to him. The accused made various rude and obnoxious statements to Chris in the past and Chris usually brushed off the comments or just read him like the fool he is. Months prior to the murder, the accused was heard by 3 women and a man at the gym where Chris worked, making not only vulgar remarks about Chris, but RACIST remarks to him as well. He was heard telling Chris ” Why you don’t leave black women alone, with your white “r@ss”, at which point Chris told him “Jealousy doesn’t suit you” . He purposely set out to physically Chris. He brought the knife with him to the eatery with the intenintention to do bodily hard and he did just that and more by killing him!!! WHAT AN ACT OF COWARDICE! He deserves the GALLOWS. I hope Antigua brings back hanging or some type of death penalty. Chris’s family now have to suffer the grief and horrific pain all over again. I spoke to Chris the weekend before his death about my plans to come home (Antigua) for a visit and we were planning kite surfing and some diving. My sincere and deepest condolences to the Smithers family. May Chris continue to rest in peace 🙏 and on that resurrection say, rise in glory 🌄.

  8. It’s not even just about this case. This man Nathaniel Wallace has hurt so many people physically and scared people for life. He needs help, he needs jail time. He will do it again and again. I don’t now how this man keeps getting out of jail. Not just in Antigua but the other islands too. Money talks

  9. This keeps happening over and over again, no wonder why our murder rate is getting higher and people keeping going missing. At this point we are on our own.

  10. ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA RECORDS SECOND MURDER FOR 2025

A 40 year old man is dead and another man has been hospitalised after they were shot in Swetes Friday night. The double shooting happened shortly before 11pm. Eyewitnesses say a lone gunman walked up to the two men and opened fire before escaping on foot. The men were rushed to hospital, where one was pronounced dead and the other admitted in stable condition.

Police have launched a top-level probe as they try to nab the shooter. Anyone with information which can assist is being asked to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913, or Crimestoppers at 800-8477.

This is Antigua and Barbuda’s second murder since the start of 2025.
