Pompey Suggests Family May Appeal to Governor General for Reprieve in Mongoose Gun Case

Former Commissioner of Police and columnist Rawlston Pompey has suggested that the family of convicted tattoo artist Kelvin “Mongoose” Russell may wish to appeal to the Governor General for a reprieve, following the influencer’s sentencing on firearm charges.

Russell, who pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm, ammunition, and a silencing accessory, was sentenced to a total of 3 and a half years in prison.

Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel handed down the sentence on Wednesday after police discovered a Glock 80 pistol with ten rounds and a suppressor at his Lightfoot residence.

In two comments published online, Pompey pointed to the option of clemency, writing: “Family may appeal to His Majesty’s Prison Governor General for a reprieve.”

Pompey noted that although Russell showed remorse, had no previous convictions, was gainfully employed, and had dependents, these mitigating factors were seemingly not enough to persuade the sentencing magistrate to exercise leniency.

“Now, my neighbour ‘Mongoose’ seemed to have been darn unlucky,” Pompey wrote. “Submitting and subjecting himself to the court’s mercy… no antecedents… talented and skilful… a dependent mother and two little ones.”

He criticised what he saw as an imbalance in the justice system, referencing the Probation of Offenders Act and questioning whether adjudicators are making full use of its provisions.

He also raised concerns about selective law enforcement, suggesting that certain communities may be treated more harshly than others.

Pompey ended his remarks with a message of support for Russell’s family, stating, “Empathy to Mongoose and his neighbourly family… Walk good.”

Russell is currently serving his sentence at His Majesty’s Prison.

  1. As I said many of the criminals in Society are hiding in plain site because they know of the expected double standard.

I never rate this man Pompey but for him to suggest that yet again confirms how corrupt we are as a Society. Moreso it confirms whether you are in or out the force corruption abounds in the minds of police officers.

  2. So every family should get the rights to do so also, you can’t be just doing that for one person………Doesn’t the gun laws of antigua apply to all, business man or not???There is a gun amnesty presently going on so why didn’t he turn his gun in????If he smuggled the silencer in the country what else could he be smuggling???a silencer is not easy to put hands on in Antigua………Spend the time and just cool king……….One artist is in jail for rape now the other is in for gun an ammo………………Living too reckless guys, not a gd public figure or example

  3. Dear Mr. Pompey,
Perhaps you need to check the history of your neighbor. Any appeal for this man would be an injustice to the victims of his crimes, for which he went unpunished. It is alleged that this is not his first appearance in court regarding this type of charge.(Further investigation needed) Question: “What person has a silencer, gun and ammunition, without criminal intent?”
I applaud the magistrate for his diligence in securing the safety of this land. He acted without prejudice for our safety. Mr. Pompey, look at the bigger picture: Antigua is under seige to lawless criminals who rob, murder and terrorize our people. The ‘GOOD NEIGHBOR’ jargon doesn’t hold up when someone’s life maybe at the end of that suppressor.
Mr. Magistrate, thank you for assisting in making our streets safer.

  4. What is so special about him….the Skinout….or using of his skills in the wrong way…show me your company I’ll tell you who you are…

  5. I take no glory in anybody’s imprisonment and just as Jesus forgave us, we should be willing to forgive others. However, we have to be mindful and careful of the signal that this would be sending to others. So called “good people” must set example and respect the laws. Laws are not made for poor and criminal minded people alone. Mongoose crime was a very serious, grievous and dangerous one. Not only did he have an illegal gun but he had a silencer with it, which showed a dreadful and atrocious intent. We cannot just be sorry for people when they get caught. People must learn to respect the law because there is a price to pay for lawlessness.

  6. What goes for 1 goes for all. Just last year a well know business man who has multiple businesses on the island was found in possession of ilegal gun and ammunition and he was sentence to more that 3 years in prison. Wrong and wrong. When justice does what it’s supposed to do we fight it and say give the person a brake because………. and when justice falls short we are the same people to bash it…. we really can’t please anyone in this small island of ours.

  7. Bad, bad timing to get caught with an unlicensed firearm when Law enforcement just went out their way to pull off a gun amnesty no question asked, but here we are not only unlicensed but also a silencer.
Why do you need to carry a silencer in Wadadl? I know you’re not a Hit man, so the only way I see a lighter sentence is by informing us on how you got this ammo package.

  8. For the COM to suggest this is ludicrous! He knew that his firearm was illegal and still chose to break the law. This suggestion flies in the face of justice, law and order. That is why people think that the police is a joke. The judge gave the sentence, let him serve it to show others that it does not pay to break the law, no matter who you are. He knew he had dependents and still kept his gun illegally. We hope this lesson will be well-learned.

  9. I am disappointed with this article. Is the author trying to indicate that beause Mongoose is a business owner and well known that the fact he had a silencer in his possession should be ignored? Is he more special than others who have been caught with illegal firearms? Is it because he is the author’s neighbor? The 3-year sentence is light in my opinion. Only those who have diabolical intentions would even think to get a silencer. It also presents a bigger question: how readily available are these types of illegal accessories in Antigua. I can remember seeing him on Crossroads website speaking about overcoming addiction. I was rooting for him. I thought he was trying to do the right things. I believe in second chances, except for when people are walking around with tools used by assassins. He did the crime and he should do the time with no fanfare or hype.

  10. Go to the Governor General for what ? To pardon a man caught with a firearm, ammunition and a silencer ? Will the Governor pardon all the others in prison for the same crime ? Mr. Pompey you should never suggest that. Your rating drop big time.

  11. It’s Antiguan Young Thug? Black Marilyn Manson? A gothic or Metal Emo black dude? Always respect him for not following the trend and having his own unique style…Behind that is Mongoose who was a part of Mosisabat which was a collective thugs…Goose a Harden street guy but has since seemed to have left that life behind and focus on his tattoo and body piercing business..I honestly don’t believe he had the firearm for malicious intent but for his own protection….The problem there is a gun amnesty and just before him another man was caught with an illegal firearm in his possession and was swiftly sentenced.. He can’t get away from the fire…

  12. My good friend Rawlston Pompey I hear your call for clemency by writing to the Governor General. That call would just open the floodgates for everyone convicted and sentenced for a gun crime to seek clemency. I was in court when the judgment was delivered and the Magistrate was very detailed in following the Court’s Sentencing Guidelines. He was actually commended by attorney Wendell Alexander for the comprehensiveness of her decision. The country is overrun by gun crimes and the perpetrators must understand that there is no longer any fine for such a crime but rather a custodial sentence. The government is serious about stemming the occurrence of such crimes and young men in particular should understand that 1735 will be the punishment. Mongoose might have been your neighbour but do not allow that to affect your objectivity.

  13. Good day
Personally, I find Mr Pompey to be rather reckless with this suggestion.
Considering the fact that there is the possibility of additional charges once they get back the ballistic report on the gun. Now, I know in the past this was done overseas so it took a little time, especially in cases where the defendant pleads guilty and accepts responsibility, they could be off to jail
before such a report is confirmed.
Well lets hope the police did a thorough
investigation considering the amount of unsolved crimes we have.

  14. Wait a cotton picking moment .. that guy was on his social media with an assault rifle singing a bad man Song about killing, do you understand that he had a silencer, 10 rounds of ammunition and a air compressor when they raided his house and he so innocent that he throw it out the window like a fool not knowing once they come for you they surround the premises and seal off any possible exits ..he is dam lucky he didn’t get more time as he should have, the silencer alone should have carried more time than the gun because having it suggests that this man is like a sniper or something.. I don’t believe he’s anywhere near innocent. remember the Goldberg killer he was an architect he has been killing women for almost 20 years. he lived in plain sight…. please guys stop the jokes. I think if he appeals or try to get a lesser sentence he should actually get more for being stupid to even try by asking the governor General to do such a thing… as for you Pompey you must be getting a little senile with your poor judgment of character, ask him what happened in Vipers strip club in 2018 when he got shot in the face? Why was he there what the argument was about etc… are we living in a fog? Are we of the belief that some people are greater than others in terms of punishment given . A man last week was sentenced to 18 months in jail for having a gun “ONLY” and also the guy from road house and now this man gets caught with a gun, silencer and a couple of other things and he gets three years. Is this a joke? now he wants to say don’t be like him. He had a platform to reach people from all over, especially in Antigua and he could have used it for GOOD …

  15. Remember there was a fun Amnesty in effect, so he did get a chance and choose not to take it. Sometimes, these amnesties are in place to give those who the police knows have illegal weapons a chance. Just like everlasting life in which we are all given the chance to have but yet we are taking a chance to live without Christ then when the sentence of hell comes, what are we gonna do? There will be no governor general to ask for reprieve. Hell is far worst than 1735

  16. All these dumb women on social media with no boundaries and morals, talking about “free Goose” some of you Antiguan woman sickening nf!

  17. I’m sorry Mr Pompey, but asking for mercy for this man should fall on deaf ears, because there is one thing that I am deeply troubled with about this particular case, is that the man had in his possession, just not a gun, but a suppressed magazine. That is itself tells me that this is a season criminal and have every intentions of hurting someone maliciously, and not just having a gun to defend himself.

Normal gun holders do not have these types of armory, much less the police. The gun is one thing, but having a silencer paints a deadly picture, and give a darker perspective about this offender.

He may not have a criminal record, but given the facts of this case, the intentions of this offender of the law,is clear, he was out to do some serious damage with that gun/silencer.

Put that into context while you ask for mercy for this criminal.

    A silencer Pompey?

  18. I normally look up to the former Commissioner on his insight of the law. However, I believe he stood to the bottom with his opinion in this case. He is trying to defend a case by stating the law in partial to some and yet at the same time, suggest that pardon should be granted, which in itself with create partiality.

I do not know Mangoose personally but for him to have a silencer, he must have other intent than even to protect himself. What is he involved with for him to need a silencer? Do the authorities even off permits for silencers? Also, why a Glock, that is a heavy piece of equipment.

Mr. Pompey, why should the Governor General offer a pardon for a person with a silencer, a Glock and bullets when others get mandatory prison time for just a bullet?

  19. Pompey has to be an ass to suggest about a reprieve for this person. This is not a spur of the moment action where someone looses their cool. Looses control. Why would someone have a gun?. To shoot /kill, or to rob. When you rob at gun point persons can be killed by accident, or intentionally if they resist. Yeah, I know lawyers will always say “my client had the gun for protection”. But you are a businesman apply for a gun. For Pompey or the defense lawyer, or the writer to suggest. Claim, or opined that he had the gun for self protection is bordering on retarded. Why would he have an accompanying silencer.. Why a silencer. Why.

Pompey needs a Spanish to keep him busy.

I have a message from my cousin, the wife of a police officer, to Pompey.

“Tell he when he see me and my family a Chase Supermarket a shop, tell he that is we family time, tell he tap approach me husband to tallk about Police stuff. A wa. he na hab notten else fu do.

Bob asked us to ” emancipate yourself from mental slavery” because ” non but ourselves can free our minds”. Physically, Pompey is retired. Mentally he is not. It is a disease.

    You need help boss.

  20. Wait a minute!!!! mangoose use to be RAWLSTON POMPEY neighbor in the bushes? … I cannot believe Pompey a former commissioner speak so loosely, it sounds like you are not a “stand up guy “. I also want to beg you’ll FAMILY MEMBERS TO PLEASE LET THE GOOSE DO HIS TIME BC “TRUST ME “ He should have gotten more … REALTALK!

  22. My good friend Rawlston Pompey we are all aware that under the Constitution the Governor General is given the power to grant clemency to any convicted person. That is not the issue here. You seem to think that the sentence of three and a half years was excessive. What of the case of the gentlemen that was on his way to the police station to turn in a gun under the Amnesty and he was instead charged, convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison. That sentence is one I would consider excessive. The situation now is that once you are convicted of a gun crime it straight to prison since a fine no longer exist. I guess that is your so-called reference to STRICT LIABILITY although it is not correctly used in the case in question. The Magistrate in her decision followed the Sentencing Guidelines to the letter. Yes, Mongoose pleaded guilty to the possession of the firearm and that was taken as a mitigation factor in his sentencing. Personally, I do not think that young men in the society who are inclined to have illegal firearms or commit offences with firearms are fully aware of the serious consequences that are now associated with such crimes. If the serious consequences do not now serve as a deterrent, I really do not know what will. Finally, the fact the the Governor General can grant clemency is not in dispute. That is a known fact.

  23. Mr. POMPEY your are splitting hairs when you say there was NO TRIAL so the Magistrate had no decision to make. YES there was no TRIAL because the Defendant pleaded Guilty. However, the Magistrate gave her DECISION on SENTENCING. Any appeal in this matter will be on her sentencing decision.
