After eight months, the families of three Cameroonian victims who perished in a migrant smuggling disaster still haven’t collected their ashes in St Kitts.
The tragedy occurred when a vessel carrying 34 individuals, including the Cameroonian nationals, capsized near St Kitts while they attempted to reach the United States via the US Virgin Islands.
Although extensive recovery efforts were made, 13 people were presumed dead, and three bodies were cremated without family consent due to the high storage cost.
The remains remain unclaimed in St Kitts.
Following the incident, responsibility for addressing the migrants remaining in St Kitts was disputed between the governments of St Kitts and Antigua, eventually leading to UN involvement.
Santana Areche, a crew member who escaped custody, is still at large, while other Cameroonians have been integrated into St Kitts society with temporary housing as their asylum applications are processed by the UN High Commission for Refugees.
This arrangement was set to conclude last month.
