Families who place elderly relatives at the Fiennes Institute could soon be required to contribute to their care under proposed legislation expected to be laid before Parliament in 2026.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin said the measure, to be included in a new Aged Care Bill, is intended to address what he described as a growing problem of abandonment and neglect of older people in Antigua and Barbuda. Speaking during the final day of the 2026 Budget Debate, he said families must be held financially accountable when they leave relatives in state care.
Sir Steadroy cited cases in which relatives, though able to assist, fail to do so, arguing the government can no longer shoulder the full cost of care alone. He said the proposed law would seek to ensure greater responsibility by families toward their elderly loved ones.

Baffoonery. Sir my Ass
Best of ablp try.milk out fckn antiguans
These same people you demand to vote for you, now you are saying you can’t provide basic social benefits for. You rob the locals of opportunities, they are not able to pay for family care, as ABLP made themself and their family get all the local money and now you are going to take away this vital help too and push poor people poorer. You are evil.
how exactly did “ABLP made themself and their family get all the local money”????
It is unfair for children to expect the government to take care of their parents when they are of age. Shame on them
Why not levy such care against the assets of the elderly. Placing a caveat on them.
Once assigned to fiennes or any other govt institution. Social security should pay fiennes. Abandonment means heirs and successors abandon any inheritances.
It is unbelievable how children can just dump their parents and leave them in the hands of a state that dont even have the resources, This always baffles me
We need to do better for our elderly. We have failed them.tremendously
Some children died before their parents. Government must always have a safteynet
Do these ppl get social security, do they have properties in their name, that should be their payment, if the have money why would they live at fiennes
Is because they are poor, so we are suppressing the poor for money, the street going to be full of homeless ppl. Politicians look down from their mansions and say how can I get money from the underprivileged Benjamin stop the over eating and donate food at the institution help the poor.
Who going and pay for a place like that?
The government know how it is..you cant force children to take care of the older people but u can provide a better place for them
Here’s an idea, why don’t the government do what My Way of Helping is suggesting!
Build a holistic retirement facility at Fort James similar to Upscale Retirement facilities for people who are retired but still active, have them and other local investors, invest in this facility and blend in those who would receive Social Security, Energy Assistance, Food Assistance.
You’d find even the rich who can really afford to pay, even those in the diaspora who wants to retire in paradise will come online.
Gated Community with amenities from bowling to gymnasiums with pools walking, hiking, biking trails. Shopping from unique boutiques carrying crafts, etc made by the retirees; even BNB for visiting relatives from overseas.
Get creative folks. Such would employ as much as a hotel but on an all year around basis.
Retire like they do in Florida, California, North & South Carolina.
I’m sure Europe has these MULTIUSE RETIREMENT FACILITIES!
