Ex-Police Commissioner alleges ‘execution’ in fatal shooting

Former Police Commissioner Ralston Pompey has accused the police of “cold-blooded execution” in a recent fatal shooting, raising questions about the conduct of officers and the handling of the investigation.

Pompey, who once headed the Criminal Investigation Department, cited inconsistencies in the evidence. He said while the constable involved admitted firing three rounds, investigators recovered four shell casings. A second officer is now under scrutiny.

He further alleged that the victim’s female passenger was a police informant who was texting plainclothes officers trailing the car. According to Pompey, the circumstances made it “impossible” for officers to have seen a weapon inside the tinted vehicle at night.

The former commissioner criticised current Police Commissioner Everton jeffers for transferring the primary officer involved to the Strategic Service Unit, comparing such units to controversial security forces in the Caribbean.

Pompey also stressed the need for a coroner’s inquest before any charges are laid, pointing to delays in other cases such as the 2021 death of Police Sergeant Iyo Merchant.

The victim’s family has retained attorney Wendell Robinson. Pompey described the appointment as a strong step, urging authorities to ensure transparency and legal compliance in the investigation.
