Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt Scraps $67.6 Million Purchase of Abandoned Superyacht

Bloomberg – Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has backed out of purchasing a superyacht that’s been abandoned in Antigua for over a year, after the sale became mired in lawsuits.

Schmidt withdrew his $67.6 million winning bid for the Alfa Nero several days ago, said Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the US.

In June, Schmidt won an auction for the luxury vessel, but the deal was later challenged in court by the daughter of Russian fertilizer billionaire Andrey Guryev.

“Schmidt, because of the legal wrangling, determined that we could not give him clear title of the ship,” Sanders said in a Friday interview.

“That’s not accurate, because the ship belongs to us, it is owned by the government.”

A spokesperson for Schmidt didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 267-foot Alfa Nero, complete with a baby grand piano and a swimming pool that turns into a helipad, was abandoned in Antigua’s Falmouth Harbour in March 2022, after the US Treasury sanctioned Guryev.

While he denied he owned the superyacht, his daughter, Yulia Gurieva-Motlokhov, later stepped forward to claim it.

After the US lifted sanctions on the vessel, Antigua’s government auctioned it off despite Gurieva-Motlokhov’s attempts to block the sale. Since then, her lawyers have appealed to courts in Antigua hoping to void the transaction.

Sanders said Warren E. Halle, a developer from Maryland, was the runner-up on the Alfa Nero auction. Halle didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

Schmidt, who served as Google’s chief executive for about a decade, has an estimated net worth of $27 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

He’s collected about $4 billion from the sale of Alphabet stock over the years, which has helped fund his investments in AI startups.

  1. When you have a scamp like Darwin Telemaque who lies with impunity what do you expect. One thing we all know, is that there is a Russian watching this and the war with Ukraine will end. There will be a reckoning and those Russians will get the mastermind and his cronies one-way or another.

  3. The first buyer withdrew and the second buyer is suing the government? And Cutie is advising the government on the sale as AG while his lawyer son is advising the second buyer on the other side? Is that all correct? What a clusterf*ck Gaston and Cutie have created out of pure greed!

    • How on earth, can the Attorney General’s son be in anyway involved with this Alfa Nero situation – it just beggars belief!

Haven’t Antiguans already witnessed big big problems with nepotism regarding Katrina Yearwood (Immigration Department) and Maria Browne (Housing and Land); and know Benjamin’s son (Lawer) is directly linked with legal advice.

I’m no crystal ball gazer, but if the rise of the ‘nepo babies’ continues unabated, unabashed and uncontrolled, then Antigua & Barbuda is in big trouble in DECADES to come.

As the song goes: “🎶There Maybe Trouble Ahead …🎶”

  4. All of these guys are complete idiots to think that such an asset would be so easy to confiscate and sell without any pushback. They are supposed to be so bright but can’t seem to do anything right.

  5. I am trying so hard not to laugh or cry. I have to ask who was advising the government? Was it the all knowing legal luminary from Dominica? Was it the ever brilliant ambassador the double SIR? Was it the “Love”… no it cannot be the Love or else that would be insider trading. Or was it a case of the all powerful TOP DAWG once again dragging this country into another episode of scandalous soap opera.
I have heard about the term…you too soup but in the case it is …” dem tooo bright’
