Antigua and Barbuda’s visa-free access to Europe could face greater scrutiny under new European Union rules making it easier to suspend or revoke such privileges.

The European Parliament has approved legislation allowing the EU to halt visa-free travel from any of the 61 countries currently benefiting from the arrangement — including Antigua and Barbuda — if concerns arise over security risks, human rights violations or criminal activity.

The law also targets nations with citizenship-by-investment schemes, often called “golden passport” programmes, which the EU warns could be misused by sanctioned individuals or criminals.

Antigua and Barbuda’s programme falls within this category and may come under closer monitoring.

The new system introduces specific thresholds for action, such as sharp increases in overstays or asylum rejections. It also enables the EU to sanction individual officials rather than entire populations.

The measure still requires final approval from the EU Council before coming into force 20 days after publication in the EU’s Official Journal.

Officials in St John’s are expected to watch developments closely as the EU strengthens oversight of its visa-free travel agreements.
