Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called for greater environmental responsibility as Antigua and Barbuda moves forward with its cruise port expansion.
Speaking at a recent event, Browne stressed the need for cleaner practices, urging citizens to take greater care in preserving the country’s natural beauty.
The expansion of the cruise port, a key component of the government’s tourism development strategy, is expected to bring economic benefits.
However, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact, particularly in relation to waste management and marine ecosystem preservation.
“We must take responsibility for keeping our country clean,” Browne said.
“Tourism thrives when we maintain high environmental standards, and it is in our best interest to ensure that our surroundings remain attractive for both residents and visitors.”
Authorities have outlined measures to mitigate potential environmental damage, including enhanced waste disposal systems and stricter regulations for businesses operating within the port area.
The government has also encouraged private sector participation in sustainable tourism initiatives.
Environmental groups have welcomed the Prime Minister’s statements but stress that continued action and enforcement will be necessary.
Some have called for clearer commitments on pollution reduction and marine conservation as the cruise industry grows.
Officials remain confident that economic growth and environmental preservation can go hand in hand.
The government has reiterated its commitment to balancing development with sustainability, ensuring that Antigua and Barbuda remains a desirable and environmentally responsible tourist destination

Mr. PM, how about preventing water/sewage run-off from the city streets from going directly into the harbour where thousands of visitors arrive? First impressions count right? The discolored water from whatever filth is flowing down Tanner St. is clearly visible on the south side of the harbour and is disgusting for both visitors and locals.
Allow me as prime minister to destroy what ever mangrove with PLH in Barbuda or any other white investors, your trivial thing of dropping small item inland.
it’s time for the government to back it up with concrete actions.
I just hope this doesn’t become another slogan without real follow-through.
I believe we need stronger policies!!!!!!!
We need enforcement of the related legislation; with regulations to the Environmental Protection and Management Acr 2019, currently there are none.
