PM Browne speaks at Global Citizen concert

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced on Tuesday there will be a grand concert in Antigua & Barbuda to boost awareness of plastic pollution.

The Prime Minister was speaking to journalists at the United Nations Headquarters in New York during the launch of a new UN campaign.

UN General Assembly President, Maria Fernanda Espinosa said she intends to “leverage the capacity of the office of the president of the General Assembly to support ongoing global campaigns to beat plastic pollution”.

“It is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. Microplastics are now confirmed in table salt, in fresh water, each person on the planet is believed to have plastic in their bodies”, Espinosa stressed.

She said the campaign is comprised of two elements: global advocacy, and internal initiatives to reduce the use of plastics within the UN.

Antigua & Barbuda and Norway are leading the campaign in collaboration with the United Nations.

An event is also planned in New York in the Spring to recognize individuals and civil society that are making innovative progress against single-use plastics.

There will also be a photo contest at the UN General Assembly Visitor Center in the spring to coincide with World Environment Day.

Prime Minister Browne said the signature concert is set for April 27 and will include regional and internationally renowned musicians and artists and will highlight efforts to tackle the problem globally.

“During the past two years, we have introduced a ban, which has worked very well…Antigua & Barbuda is the first country in the Caribbean to do so. We need to protect our oceans and we are calling on all nations to join us in banning the use of single use plastics”, the Prime Minister said.

Norway’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mari Skare said the use of single-use plastic poses a threat to the oceans and to human health. “Fish eat plastics and humans eat fish, so we have a problem.”

  1. This man has vision. How better can you promote Antigua and Barbuda in the world. This is great. First we had he Women’s twenty/twenty which saw Antigua highlighted across the cricketing world. Now if this gets off the ground we will have the entire world focused on Antigua. I wonder where would be the best venue to hold that.

    • @Sideline is the accounting from the Benefit concert ready yet?

Was any funds given to Dominica and Batbuda from the funds?
Let us tidy up the benefit concert first then we can tackle the VISIONARY CONCERT, perhaps the venue could be one of the name brand hotels up by YIDA or better yet MORRIS BAY so many choices all these new properties I can see your dilemma for a suitable venue.

      • That has nothing to do with the government. That was a private organization that held the concert. What you should ask is about the Romantic Rhythm when we are going to have an accounting for that. That was the people of Antigua’s tax payers monies. And not a little bit. Over $7 million. And the sad part is you guys are silence when it comes to those issues.

        • Why are we still asking about romantic rhythms when the labor party is in power and have the where withal to produce all the documentation? Strange, the Concert at the stadium for the hurricane relief had government’s approval and we were promoting it like it was ours!!! Lets get it straight a few persons made a lot of money from that concert and I am sure the coordinators are still employed in high positions by our government….. Maybe its just me but we can’t have nice things if this ignorance continues….

      • The group who collected the funds for the benefot concert was DARF…Dominica Antigua Relief Fund…Mrs. Cecil Hill is the person you should speak with. The government did not collect one dollar from the benefit concert.

  2. If someone said they rasied money for BARBUDA and the government sanctioned the event don’t you think it is reasonable for the government to make inquires into the funds raised so that the government is cleared of conspiring with to defraud?

ABLP HAS ALL THE INFORMATION ON ROMANTIC RYTHMS. PLEASE I BEG ON BENDED KNEES MAKE PUBLIC ALL THE INFORMATION. AND JUST LIKE THE BUS SITUATION ANYONE WHO IS FOUND WANTING FULL BRUNT OF THE LAW NO EASE.

NOW ABLP IN POWER SO DO THE INVEATIGATION NOW.

ABLP ADMINISTRATION SANCTIONED THE CONCERT FULLY THEY CONTRIBUTED NUFF CONCESSIONS AND WAS A MAJOR PART OF ALL THE PROMOTIONS. SO I AND I LOOK TO THE GOVETNMENT TO PROTECT ME….
