Some 20 employees of Straffie’s Funeral Home were terminated today. According to the workers, they were handed dismissal letters by a lawyer just after 3 p.m. and escorted from the premises by two police officers.
Elizabeth Saunders, the Managing Director of Straffie’s Funeral Home, died in June. Saunders passed away at Mount St John Medical Centre after a brief period of illness.
The letter to the dismissed workers said since the owner of the business has died, they are no longer employed at the funeral home.

Is the business closing down or under new management? Severance pay?
UNION! UNION! UNION! Where are thou?
This is an excellent opportunity for Wilson Barnes. Hope he does not pass it up.
This is a travesty for the workers. The late Elizabeth Saunders passed away and the business passed away with her. This is a privately, family owned business. There are different standard operational procedures, that applies.Perhaps they have decided to close the business as we have known it.Where they would reorganized said business under a new Management structure.Keeping the same registered name.Good luck to all of you,the workers.
I thought that Barnes and Straffies would be overflowing with bodies and making money hand over fist due to Covid! Remember when people were allowed to go to supermarkets, to the beach, Airport open etc. we were all supposed to be dead soon because of Covid in the sand?
What? Only Barnes and Straffies funeral homes on the islsnd still? With the overflow of foreigners in Antigua I thought maybe 4 funeral homes by now. Doh bother wid me, papa. Where I’m at we only have 2 funeral homes and gun killings every day. But where I’m at is smaller than Antigua in sq mileage and population.
Come let’s open another one.
Me, I fraid to enter a hospital is a funeral home I’ll work?
Oh what a shame. The staff was just great for me, my husband’s body was at Straffies, Elizabeth passed away just a week later, and they handled everything very professionally, Elizabeth would have been proud.
I do hope they are reorganizing, we need their skill and compassion.
Too bad, I had some great times there.
How could you have great times at a funeral home?
This closure needs to be followed closely. There are too many weird stories being circulated out there. BTW, has the good lady been interred yet?
