Eli Fuller Warns Jolly Harbour Mega Developments Endanger Local Access to Coastline

Eli Fuller, a businessman and environmentalist residing in Jolly Harbour, recently expressed concerns about the ongoing developments in the area, where significant projects are reshaping the landscape.

In a video message, Fuller highlighted the need for thoughtful long-term planning, warning that recent changes could limit public access to the coast and negatively impact the local community.

Fuller noted that Jolly Harbour, once public crown land, was sold decades ago for $1 with promises of development that would benefit the local people, particularly those from nearby Jennings and Bolans.

He emphasized that the original plans envisioned accessible beach and coastal areas for the community, but over time, the land has been systematically privatized, reducing public access.

Two major developments are currently underway in Jolly Harbour. One is the Nikki Beach project, which Fuller describes as well-publicized, but he points out that another, larger development, led by Rob Gillespie, is quietly progressing without much media coverage.

Fuller raised concerns about the lack of parking and access for locals, noting that previous promises of a large public parking area have been compromised, as portions of the land are now being absorbed into private resorts.

Fuller also voiced frustration over the lack of consultation with the local population and the potential long-term impact of these developments on future generations.

He stressed that while economic activity from these projects may bring short-term benefits, the exclusion of local residents from enjoying their own coastline is a growing problem.

As a resident and father, Fuller called for more community involvement in the development process, urging for a balance between economic growth and preserving the island’s unique coastal lifestyle for locals.

He plans to continue raising awareness about the issues surrounding Jolly Harbour’s development.

  1. Thank you fuller. I agree. But Jolly Harbor was sold for $1? I could have offered $10.00. In fact, I am more generous than that, I could have offered $100, which is $99 above asking price.

Under which government was this $1 deal done?

  2. …”is a growing problem?” Let me clear my throat, and say, it’s too late regarding the beach access, public parking etc. Mill Reef still brings back childhood memories!
These developments are simply the Nation’s version of,

  3. Thais is a growing issue that is getting worse day by day as we see these private resorts taking over and you cant even get to access some of the nearby beaches close to your home, now you have to drive to other beaches which should not be, this is unfair to the local population especially the roots people of the soil, we born ya and cant even enjoy our own land.

  4. This is a major issue and no one seems to care. We just accept it ….. soon we shall be prisoners in our own country! Smdh

  5. That’s what the ALP is good at. If we really think that $1 was passed, we are all as crazy as the Bully. We are systematically being sold right back into colonialism. I’m already sorry for the nationals who have yet to own a plot of land, while those who are entrusted to secure our assets are grabbing up acres for peppercorn price and then resell to wealthy expatriates for hundreds of dollars per square foot. It’s just a matter of time.

  6. Where the hell is Gaston Browne in this controversial and conversational topic? He should be at the forefront of these concerns, unless Browne has given these developers carte blanche to do as they please.

Gaston Browne seems to be very vocal on litigation and UPP matters, but anything that concerns the citizens he blatantly ignores.

THE WORST PM SINCE LESTER BIRD…

  7. Very eye opening discussion,Mr.Fuller is a son of the soil that understands the importance of a healthy environment, access to coastal areas and a healthy appreciation for what we have here in Antigua & Barbuda and the wider Caribbean…Thank you for raising awareness

  8. What is the root cause of this? The idiot DAWG. Barrett erected a monstrosity on Long Bay. He says it has to be removed. It’s still there larger than life and in complete violation of our laws.
Lawrey Bay is fenced, a hotel encompasses Devils Bridge, nada. The DAWG is silent.
Since these are blatant violation of our laws,it should be easy to rescind them all and ask questions of this administration and DCA.

It is absolutely and undeniably true that this ‘…Self-styled and Self-acclaimed Environmentalist and law-abiding Citizen,’ for a very long time, has been raising:

These have not only always been ‘…MAJOR NATIONAL CONCERNS,’ but seemingly never found favors with apparent ‘…INCENTIVIZED LOCAL AUTHORITIES.’

Well, ‘…Screw up your darn faces.’

    SEGREGATIONIST-LIKE MENTALITY

While ‘MANAGEMENT’ may have displayed ‘…SEGREGAGTIONIST-LIKE MENTALITY,’ there was no place on any ‘…BARBUDAN BEACH’ for its loathed development.

    LAME DUCK ANTIGUAN AUTHORITIES

NOW, from personal and official knowledge, one of the ‘…LAME DUCK AUTHORITIES,’ has been the ‘…DEVELOPMENT CONTROL AUTHORITY (DCA).’

CREDIT TO JUNIOR MINISTER CHANLAH CODRINGTON: …ENFORCMEN OF CHAN LAW.’

Many may recall when he had responsibility for the ‘…DCA.’

Many may also recall the ‘…PEARN’S POINT DEVELOPMENT.

Many may also recall the night when he ‘…ENFORCED CHAN LAW.’

Those so recall, shall remember that ‘…UNDER OF DARKNESS,’ he boldly and bravely caused the ‘…BACKHOEING OF AN ILLEGALLY ERECTED GATE,’ that had ‘…DENIED/DEPRIVED PUBLIC/CITIZEN ACCESS’ to the ‘…Foreshore.’

MIGHTY GABBY’S SOCIAL COMMENTARY- ‘…THE BEACH BELONG TO WE.’

  11. I see Eli around and have spoken to him a couple of times over the years. He knows his stuff. He is a good man who truly cares about Antigua and has done so for a very long time. Some old-timers I know still talk about their admiration for his father for what he did for them and others in Antigua.

  12. he is nothing like his father! John Fuller was a HUMBLE, CARING, PEOPLE-CENTERED human being. He did things sincerely, not for atttention and social media Likes.
