Education Minister Urges End to Hostile Union Relations
Education Minister Daryll Matthew has called for improved dialogue with the Antigua Barbuda Union of Teachers (ABUT), warning that the government “cannot continue forward with this type of hostility.”
Speaking during Thursday’s Parliament sitting, Matthew criticised the union’s recent strike action, which disrupted public schools for a week. He described the move as excessive, especially since the issue of unpaid stipends did not affect primary school teachers.
Matthew refuted suggestions that the Ministry was unwilling to resolve the matter, stating, “We have never pushed back on any issue that benefits our educators, and we will not.” He urged the union to be more responsible in its public statements and conduct.
The Minister expressed hope for a more constructive relationship moving forward, saying the government remains committed to working with the union to support teachers and students.
The strike sparked mixed reactions among the public, with some backing the teachers and others criticising the disruption to students’ education.

I agree with you Hon Minister. The first step is to tell your boss the Hon PM to stop disrespecting union officials on his social media platforms. Let us start there.
You guys don’t take blame for nothing?
This article is a click bate. I was looking to see that the minister coming to say something more read-worthy.
The government and the Minister of Education are narcissists. You all did not have things in place even with extended deadlines, and still have the guts to say that the union should be more responsible? What?!!! Talk about victim blaming. Teachers are not begging for anything but they’re asking for what is rightfully theirs. In which other profession does an employee work for years without their allowances, upgrades or contracts? Listen…..There are too many other things I am too ‘responsible’ to say here. Time will tell
