A lack of urgency by the Establishment Department in issuing formal appointment letters to teachers has drawn sharp criticism from the Minister of Education, prompting swift intervention from Cabinet to resolve the issue by the end of the week.

During Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, Chief of Staff Ambassador Lionel Hurst revealed that the Education Minister expressed frustration over what he described as an “unacceptable delay” in delivering confirmation letters to teachers, many of whom have been in limbo despite being hired.

“The Minister reported to Cabinet that these letters should have gone out a long time ago,” Ambassador Hurst said. “Even though there was some industrial action, he felt that there was just a lack of energy and enthusiasm by those with responsibility to communicate with the teachers.”

The delay has already sparked unrest within the education sector, with brief industrial action taken earlier in the week. Cabinet has since directed the responsible officials to move with “greater alacrity” to issue the outstanding letters.

According to Hurst, the letters are expected to be delivered no later than Friday, April 4, following the Minister’s intervention. He added that the matter was being treated with urgency to prevent further disruption in schools.

Teachers’ unions and education stakeholders have long raised concerns about administrative bottlenecks and delays in processing appointments and confirmations. The latest intervention by Cabinet suggests the issue has reached a tipping point.

It remains to be seen whether the affected teachers will receive their letters on the newly promised timeline—and whether the action taken by Cabinet will restore calm

  1. I hope all of those teachers are are seeking appointment are qualified teachers, because most of the time the leaves the pressure on students, and parents to their work,by giving students a lot of homework with giving example of how those home work should be done…

  2. This is so ridiculous, I mean the minister probably didn’t even know but he is still responsible. The persons who are incharge of that needs to be suspended. We need to start holding people accountable

  3. This is what happens when government after government fills the Ministries with their constituents. They are largely there for a job and not to work. In any case they are not qulaified and are square pegs in round roles but they have an X and that is all that matters. This will never change. This system is in the DNA of Antiguans and Barbudans. The state will provide. They neither have to work or produce.

  4. Daryll Matthew is the worst education minister in Antigua’s history.
Daryll Matthew is the worst sports minister in Antigua’s history.
Just when Daryll should be counting down his day as parliamentary representative and being part of a governing party the UPP has given him another life.
Instead of chosing a competent candidate to beat Daryll Matthew the UPP chose a loyalist.
They are not interested in winning.
They just want to be heard of as runners.
Pringle knows that he cannot take Antigua out of a phone booth so he is not doing anything to make him and his party competitive.
The UPP chose an opponent for Daryll Matthew who they could not put on the platform to address a public meeting in his constituency.
I guess we will see him on stage celebrating with labour party on elections night.

  5. Perhaps the Minister will now understand what the UPP aligned public servants are deliberately doing. Staling things to make him and the government look bad. That is the power they have and they are using it. Just pay them off and send them home. They will frustrate you everytime they can.

  6. I have to tip toe around Gaston and twist it to say bureaucratic delay in paying the teachers, I can’t point out Gaston as the minister of finance which he has no capacity to manage wrecking the nation finance is causing all sort a problem with funding infrastructure and public necessities.boopd!
