A 50-year-old man has been jailed for 18 months after being caught with an unlicensed firearm he claimed he was on his way to surrender under a national gun amnesty.
Ed Archibald, of Old Runaway, was stopped by police on patrol along Thames Street on Saturday evening. Officers found a black Ruger .380 pistol and six rounds of ammunition in his possession.
Archibald pleaded guilty to the charges on Tuesday.
His lawyer, Leon Symister, told the court his client intended to hand over the weapon to police as part of the country’s ongoing amnesty programme.
However, Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel imposed an 18-month sentence for the firearm offence and a concurrent six-month term for ammunition possession, citing standard sentencing guidelines.

BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF I AM DRIVING MY CAR ON OLD PARHAM ROAD ON A WEEK DAY AND POLICE STOP ME WITH EXPIRED LICENSE TAG ON MY CAR. I SHOW THEM MY INSURANCE AND LET THEM I AM ON MY WY TO TRANSPORT BOARD. HOW CAN THEY TELL ME THAT I AM LYING…ED ARCHIBALD HAS A CASE TO FIGHT……NO FLIPPING WAY YOU CAN FIND A MAN WITH AN ILLEGAL GUN AND HE SAYS HE IS ON HIS WAY TO THE FLIPPING GUN AMNESTY AND HE GETS ARRESTED…NO WAY!!!!!!
Think on your feet……. First up, the officers pulled you over…. You don’t allow them to search and discover the firearm in your vehicle. Your first order of business is to tell the officers that you have a firearm and ammunition with you and you are on your to the police station to turn it in……. Those are the first words that should come from your mouth….
@ Think on your feet…..Sigh……Some people freeze or get nervous in the presents of police uniforms….Not the humans wearing them but the uniform itself…That shining crest on the visor cap or the black suits with tactical gears and the letters POLICE makes some people get slow….He simply got a little nervous and felt intimidated as to why he did not let the officers know of his intentions with the firearm…..Not all of us are quick thinkers/professional liars…
I wonder why he was stopped and searched in the first place? Suspicious looking? What time was he stopped? What area? What direction was he headed? There is too many unanswered questions here.
