The government of Antigua and Barbuda has engaged a Dutch dredging firm to assist Blue Ocean in accelerating the St. John’s Harbour dredging project.
The Antigua Port Authority will finance the harbour dredging, while the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) is responsible for funding similar work at North Sound.
At the Post-Cabinet Press Briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst confirmed the partnership, stating that Dutch dredging equipment is being transported to Antigua to begin work.
“The firm is moving machinery, possibly from St. Maarten or Guadeloupe, rather than from the Netherlands,” he said.
The dredging at St. John’s Harbour is essential for accommodating larger vessels, while the work at North Sound is linked to APUA’s *liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant, which requires deeper waters to allow for *safe docking of supply ships.
Hurst explained that while Blue Ocean holds the primary contract, the Dutch firm will act as a subcontractor. “Payments will be made to Blue Ocean, which will, in turn, compensate the Dutch dredging company,” he clarified.
The government expects the project to be completed *within the planned timeframe, ensuring that both commercial and energy-related shipping operations benefit from the improvements.

Shit like this should need public approval and public details show it does affect wild life habitats
@Stupid Young Antiguan Communist. No silly boy, the public will never be asked to approve how vital infrastructure is built. Now take your small brained commie ass back to school or move to Cuba.
I know some of my ideas are radical but know how projects affect the area I feel is a standard issue and even you should have a say if the effect are overall negative deepening the sea floor invites stronger waves, higher shoreline since its not breaking the waves and you are literally killing marine habitats. Like dawg this very logical
Has anybody noticed how busy a lot of parents who have children writing CSEC are these days? Guess what they are so busy doing?
WRITING THE PICKYNEARGA DEM SBAs. And we wonder why the children have subject they pass and they don’t even know anything about them.
This partnership could bring much-needed improvements to St. John’s Harbour.
I hope the environmental impact of dredging is carefully considered.
I wonder if this project be fully transparent and accountable?
A dredged harbor will likely boost tourism, but what about the local businesses and fishermen?
Will the Dutch firm be held to the same environmental standards as local companies?
Hope the project brings more job opportunities for locals, especially in the construction phase.
How will the dredging affect marine life in the area?
In case you don’t know, the government owns 40% of Blue Ocean.
@Tru Anu & Stone: The dutch dredging company has worked around the world, including St. John’s Harbour in 2020-2021. In addition to their own environmental guidelines and international standardization, they would be required to follow all other standards as defined by the country they work in.
@AAB: The same as dredging anywhere close to shore, very limited impacts. Most marine life is not hanging out close to shore around busy, shallow harbours, especially St. John’s Harbour.
Well when you find a donkey you ride it,that’s Antiguan public, passive people that just allow the politicians to infantilized them , so them dredging company heat about easy money here while you give the politician them cu a money.
