SOURCE: DAILY OBSERVER– A man who was distracted when he tried to retrieve a baby bottle while driving, was convicted, reprimanded and discharged and ordered to pay compensation for careless driving.

Matthew Mitchel pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason in St John’s Magistrates’ Court.

Mitchel was driving along Friars Hill Road on August 25, 2023, when he became distracted and ran into the rear of the vehicle that was in front of him.

Both vehicles were traveling in a northerly direction in a line of traffic when the defendant bent over to retrieve his child’s bottle that had fallen to the floor of his vehicle.

When officers visited the scene of the accident about 2:30pm, Mitchel told them that he was driving, the traffic came to a standstill and he collided with the vehicle in front of him.

The court gave him until February 11 to pay just over $1,200 to the female complainant, failure of which will land him in prison for 30 days.

  1. No but on a serious not why he even allowed this matter to be in court and waste time? He know he was wrong. WTH….A father should know better than to let something as trivial as a baby bottle distract him while driving. It puts not only his child’s life at risk but also everyone else on the road. It’s hard to believe that someone would be so careless—was it really worth it to take his eyes off the road for a bottle? Maybe he wanted milk….Parenthood comes with responsibilities, and this just shows a lack of judgment. He should have pulled over safely instead of endangering lives!

  2. So how about all the careless assholes causing crashes everywhere everyday 🤔 due to reckless driving?

  3. I want to know if they even got consent from the person before posting this. Honestly, people in Antigua just take things and run with it without thinking. The chat is so frustrating because people love to talk without knowing the full story. The first comment makes no sense at all—the person sounds like an educated fool. Are you a driver, a passenger, or just someone who’s never even been behind a steering wheel? You sound more like a pedestrian who’s never driven a car in their life.

And that last comment about the baby in the front seat? You sound like a child who just learned to read and talk, trying to be funny but failing miserably. If that was your ticket to survival, you’d lose it in a heartbeat.

The point is, there are two sides to every story. Unless you know the person (which I do) and the full details, you all need to quiet down. The bottle dropped on the driver’s side of the vehicle—that’s all I’m saying. Anyone with sense and real knowledge would understand that there’s more to this story.

  4. Waste of the court time knowing he is liable and have insurance.
Only if wanted time to raised the money and don’t claim on the insurance in which makes no sense to me

  5. The young man was hospitalized in the ICU and on dialysis jus a few days after the incident with an illness that made him almost lose his life an became fully dependant. Putting him in the position to bed ridden, rebuild the strength of his lungs an learn to walk again. Alot of times we make our own suggestions of a situation but why does it always have to be negative?
