Dredging at Parham Harbour Delayed as Work Continues in St. John’s Harbour

Dredging at Parham Harbour remains behind schedule due to hard bedrock formations and other technical challenges, leading the government to order a new geological survey to assess the best way forward.

Despite the delays in Parham Harbour, dredging operations are continuing at St. John’s Harbour, according to Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst, who provided updates during the Post-Cabinet press briefing.

“The survey, you know, they did not speak of the survey yesterday. I should have inquired myself about the survey, but they did speak about proceeding with the dredging,” Hurst said.

He also confirmed that the Blue Ocean team is actively removing rock formations using specialized equipment, and that photos of the materials removed were shown in Cabinet. “And we saw photographs of the rocks that had been removed in a day. They were all in a barge, ready to be taken somewhere. So the work is continuing,” he explained.

However, work at Parham Harbour faces significant setbacks. The Dutch Dredging company, which was expected to assist with certain aspects of the project, has experienced delays due to equipment availability.

“At one point, we heard that the equipment was in Guadeloupe, and then we also understand that the equipment might be further away and it would take them a longer time to get to Antigua,” Hurst stated.

The dredging project is intended to improve port accessibility for larger vessels and enhance maritime trade, but challenges have impacted the completion timeline. While the government remains committed to seeing the project through, a revised timeline has not yet been set.

  1. Disappointing to hear about the delays, but hopefully, the meeting with Blue Ocean will help resolve the issues and get the dredging projects back on track for the island’s progress.

  2. I think that the local company Blue Ocean should be fully equipped before starting work on something so that there are no problems in the process.

  3. I sometimes wonder if people within the government own these dredging equipment. I ask this because of the amount of dredging done with no end in sight.

  4. They have probably gone back to St. John’s to continue the $1000 dollars an hour excavator scooping up water. Who are the principals of Blue Ocean? Just asking.
