Drainage Work at Tranquility Park to Begin Soon, Says Health Minister
Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph says work to install a new drainage system at Tranquility Park cemetery will begin soon following Cabinet approval.
Responding to a journalist’s question during his press conference, Joseph said the design for the drainage had already been completed and was ready to be implemented. He added that the Prime Minister had instructed that the work proceed quickly.
“I think at Cabinet tomorrow, the Cabinet will likely approve the start of the drainage within a short time,” Joseph said. “Based on the communication from the Prime Minister, I anticipate we’ll see quick action, especially on the eastern side.”

The minister said the drainage system forms part of the long-term plan for the site and will help prevent flooding after heavy rains. It follows weeks of public discussion over videos showing water accumulation at the new cemetery after recent storms.
Joseph also maintained that the issue was not due to poor planning, but rather to exceptional rainfall and the effects of climate change, and said the government remains committed to improving the site’s infrastructure.

In all honesty I do not see how putting in drainage in a very low lying area will permanently solve the problem. Government need to admit that they got this one wrong and start looking for a more suitable site for a cemetery or they will forever be plague with these issues. Even with improved drainage we will continue to have the flooding situation whenever we have torrential rains. You simply cannot make an unsuitable site suitable by just building drains. Never once have we had drainage and flooding problems in the St. John’s Public Cemetery. It was built on a rising incline that allows for proper runoff of water through Upper Fort Road and surrounding communities and the soil type is of such that it doesn’t easily become saturated when it rains.
THE GOVERNMENT KNEW THERE WAS A DRAINAGE PROBLEM BEFORE THEY STARTED BUILDING THE CEMETERY. PLEASE STOP PRETENDING YOU DID NOT KNOW. HOW CAN WE TRUST ANYTHING YOU PEOPLE SAY.
Climate change, really.
Wasn’t due to poor planning we can clearly go back to how this was talked about to be a multi-million dollar state of the art cemetery but all the eye can see its a fenced field with some roads and one building not even a parking-lot while it’s built on a main road. So how was this due to climate change was this planned and built in 1800s? Climate change as a concept was known for a century and we have drastic measures like carbon 0 been a thing for a decade when we have this cemetery completed within the last 2 months somehow didn’t take into account of that I’ve even heard and watched people talking about the results of the soil test and that people saying it use to be a pond/waterway like most of that area. This is the laziest excuse you can make there is theme with Antigua and poor drainage in everything they build from roads to building it just messes up/ don’t consider the environment they’re in
