As general elections approach, social science researcher Dr. Kwasi K. Tonge of The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus is advocating for greater civic engagement through structured candidates’ debates across constituencies.
As a resident of the St. Mary’s North constituency, Dr. Tonge said he would particularly welcome a structured constituency debate involving United Progressive Party candidate Jonathan Joseph and Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party candidate Dr. Philmore Benjamin.
He noted that such a forum would give constituents a meaningful opportunity to directly assess their policies, leadership approach, and vision for the constituency.
“Public debates are essential in any healthy democracy. They allow constituents to engage meaningfully, ask important questions, and assess the competence, character, and readiness of those seeking to lead,” he stated.
Dr. Tonge also acknowledged that political banter is often a feature of the electoral season and is something many people engage in. However, he stressed that it is equally important for residents to move beyond rhetoric and ensure they are making informed decisions at the polls.
“This is a critical moment. Voters must be equipped with the information necessary to make sound choices about their future and the future of their constituency,” he added.
He further pointed to international examples, noting that in countries such as the United Kingdom, structured debates are a longstanding and expected part of the democratic process, providing voters with the opportunity to hear directly from candidates in a transparent and accountable setting.
As an Antiguan and Barbudan and a proud son of the soil, Dr. Tonge extended best wishes to both political parties, expressing hope that the electoral process will reflect the will of the people.
“Ultimately, let democracy prevail,” he said.
