The Director of Public Prosecutions has withdrawn two separate causing death by dangerous driving cases within the past week.
On Friday, prosecutors dropped charges against Keithanya Elvin in the High Court. Elvin had been accused in connection with the 2022 death of 16-year-old cyclist Azorae Pennant.
The incident occurred on January 26, 2022, along Tyrell’s main road. Pennant was cycling north shortly before 6:30 p.m. when Elvin, driving a Honda CRV in the opposite direction, attempted to turn right. The teenager reportedly swerved to avoid the vehicle but collided with it, was thrown into the path of an oncoming pickup truck and later died at hospital.
Days earlier, prosecutors also withdrew a causing death by dangerous driving charge against a Bendals man linked to a November 14, 2022 motorcycle crash that claimed the life of 23-year-old Annik Lawrence.
No reasons for the discontinuances were given in open court.

Painful reminder of how fragile life is and how complicated justice can be
Tragic Circumstances. No one really wins here. Families are left broken
These were young people with their whole lives ahead of them. The emotional toll on their families must be unimaginable. Justice delayed, dismissed, or unclear only deepens that pain.
My heart breaks all over again for those families and this is why so many citizens feel frustrated. Dangerous driving claims lives every year, and when cases are dismissed it feels like accountability is slipping away and there is no justice to ever appear. Losing a child or loved one in a tragic accident is very devastating enough and to see charges dropped against the accused must be incredibly painful. Then the lingering silence will create doubt and erode trust in the justice system.
Sometimes it a accident unfortunately someone died intentionally is different we all had some type of accident but it wasn’t intentionally.
2 lives lost without no justice .
Black lives matter.
I expected the Elvin family withdrawal because the father works for the powerful Syrian family that runs ANTIGUA.
What about Thirty-two year old Andrea Hughes who died on March 30, 2014, after being hit by a vehicle while walking near Cedar Grove, leaving behind nine children. The driver, subsequently identified by investigators was ‘Mark Ryan has still not faced the court. And justice is still denied with everyone being very silent about this unjust. But God doesn’t sleep. I hear his name coming up along side that of Minister Anthony Smith Jr. As they seem to be old classmates. His father Mr. Patrick Ryan is the Managing Director of Geo W. Bennett Bryson & Co. Ltd. As one can see many influential people protecting him here. Not to mention his lawyer Mr. Hugh Marshall Jr. who is a very crafted lawyer and has been able to keep the case out of court for all these years. Would the PM or the Attorney General one day take interest in this case and demand that justice be done. I wonder.

COMMENTARY: Andrea Hughes: A Life For A House
May 9, 2021
by Rawlston Pompey
Not many I see eye to eye with Mr. Pompey but this article was well written by him and one should just peruse the persons in the picture and you will realize why this case is as good as death. And why Antigua and Barbuda has a very bad stain on its name and forgive me if I say a curse if they do not let justice prevail. Only a dog can be killed without any been held to account. And I’m n it saying that the young man is guilty. But justice must be done.
From Tanny Rose’s grave JUSTICE FOR ANDREA HUGHES.
I have always been sympathetic to the young lady that got into the accident with the young cyclist at Tyrell’s main road. To me it was a genuine accident. Young lady give God thanks.
To the parents and family of the young man, I cannot put myself in your shoes. It’s painful, hurtful and in your place I myself may say where is justice, even if justice is served with bias. Loosing a love one in such a tragic way is never easy. So I hope God will draw closer to you. May is lovely young soul rest in peace.
Hope the young lady is offering counseling and that she can gather the pieces.
To the “?”
Not that the young lady was found innocent because the evidence showed she was actually driving proper and that the young man was riding reckless?
Sometimes we talk things we do not know and cause more hurt and damage than what was already there.
Prayers to both families because it was a hard loss on both of them.
