Donkeys Being Stolen At Sanctuary

7

Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary, which is operated by Antigua & Barbuda humane society, has been the victim of criminal activity recently, Executive Director Karen Corbin has announced.

She said persons have been breaking into the sanctuary and stealing the sanctuary’s donkeys.

These animals are in the sanctuary either because they were abused or because they were causing problems in the community, for example invading farmers’ fields.

Corbin said it is the role of the humane society to provide care and control for the sanctuary donkeys for the rest of their lives.

“The police are taking this matter seriously and are actively investigating,” she said.

If you have any information that could assist in securing the return of the sanctuary donkeys, please contact the humane society at 461-4957.

  1. These things would happened since we have a cultural diversity in Antigua and Barbuda. There are people from different country with different cultural background. I am sadden to hear this has happened to sanctuary donkeys. I hope that they were taken for recreational and return safe instead for food consumption.

    • So because “cultural diversity” exists in Antigua according to you, the rules, norms and cultural practices of the host country must be violated and discarded? You think you could get away with violating their cultural practices if the shoe was on the other foot??

  2. I would like to suggest that perhaps spending an appropriate amount of donation monies on securing the donkey enclosure is definitely needed to stop or at least minimize this problem. A good quality high fence with barbed wire at the top with lockable gates would have to impede anyone trying to steal a donkey. A security camera/s and enough lighting covering the whole area would also be very beneficial. These animals are a responsibility and besides ensuring that they are adequately fed they must be protected in every way necessary for their wellbeing by the person who made them their responsibility! So, Ms. Corbin, you are an apparent charitable organization…live up to that responsibility that you created and do whatever it takes! I am sure the police will help and animal theft is a felony but it would be difficult for them to catch perpetrators if an enclosure is not secure and (most important) not on camera.

  3. If somebody illegally adopt a donkey from the sanctuaey then thw donkey find a new home. The humane society save money. But i hope people not eating donkey
