A Dominican Republic national living in Antigua says she is living in fear after a violent assault last month left her hospitalised.

Criselle Alexandra Mateo Javeir, 25, told reporters she was struck twice over the head with a piece of wood on the evening of 26 August after refusing gifts from a man she once considered a close friend.

She said she lost consciousness and required several stitches to her scalp. Her four-year-old son witnessed the attack.

According to Javeir, the man’s mother intervened and stopped the assault. She also claims she has since faced threats and harassment from the man and his family, who are pressuring her not to pursue the case.

Police confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued and that a court hearing is set for 16 September, but Javeir says little has been done to guarantee her safety.

Having moved to Antigua just over a year ago in search of a better life for her son, Javeir says she now remains in hiding, struggling with trauma, discrimination, and the language barrier. Her appeal, she says, is simple: protection before it is too late.

  1. Not letting anyone let me live in fear am taking justice in my hands if the police can’t help me

  2. How these young beautiful women end up with these kinds of men? So many women are being abused. They dont love the quiet well dressed men…they love those with tattoos and big chains who sell drugs. Im not rejoicing. Im just speaking factually

  3. What country are we willing in that a young vulnerable woman can’t get help. What message are we sending to those who migrate to our country seeking help

  4. Even if its sad to say antigua is not a place where can secure a person or help a person going thri domestic abuse …more times u go to the station and they laugh or make mockery of your situation ….then theres no safe house to place an indivisual whos going thru it …..i dont evwn know what else to say this is sad

  5. It’s always a struggle for those who are less fortunate. Trust me, if it were drugs, they would be all over it. Jah doesn’t sleep! That’s a tough situation. I hope you find justice.🙏🙏

  6. The fact that they didn’t show up at the hospital & she had to be the one to go and make a report the following day says a lot.

  7. Very, very sad. It might be in everyone’s best interest to just go back HOME and take as many of your idle countrymen and women with you. This island is far too small and undeveloped to support alien hordes from outside seeking a better way of life. Try Puerto Rico, North America, Mexico, South America or even Spain! If only for the benefit of your son you need to LEAVE!! The sooner, the better.
