Dominican Republic To Establish Full Embassy In Antigua, Names New Diplomat

Antigua and Barbuda is welcoming the move by the Dominican Republic (DR) to upgrade its consulate to a full embassy and the naming of its first Ambassador-Designate to St. John’s, Her excellency Raquel Jacobo.

The diplomat presented her credentials to Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Trade Minister, Hon. E.P Chet Greene, at a brief ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

Minister Greene referenced the long historic ties between Antigua and Barbuda and the DR that go back to the 1920’s when hundreds of nationals journeyed to the Spanish-speaking country to participate in the sugar industry. Many, he noted, remained there and eventually had families. “Today, many Dominicanos of Antigua and Barbuda descent have migrated to Antigua and Barbuda and now comprise approximately twenty (20) percent of our population,” he noted.

He said his government is ‘very pleased’ that the government of the DR demonstrated a keenness to pursue strong, active, diplomatic ties with Antigua and Barbuda by upgrading its diplomatic representation.

“The establishment of a DR embassy and your appointment as the first ever resident Ambassador of the DR to Antigua and Barbuda are major milestones in our relations and are a testament to the importance of the relationship between our two countries,” Greene remarked.

The minister added that Antigua and Barbuda and the DR already collaborate and coordinate on a range of issues before regional bodies such as the China-Latin America Conference (CLAC) and CARIFORUM. “Antigua and Barbuda’s strategic position in relation to the rest of the Caribbean would make it the ideal platform for dynamic commercial engagement and DR trade reach into the OECS and CARICOM markets,” he stated.

For her response, Ambassador-Designate Jacobo said she was delighted to formally present her credentials to the foreign minister and that she takes much pride in being the first full-fledged ambassador of her country to Antigua and Barbuda.
