The Dominican Republic has appointed a new consul general to Antigua and Barbuda, following the departure of outgoing envoy Joaquin Lopez Diaz last week.
Julio Cesar Mateo Baez, also known as Yulyn, has formally assumed the post, with a commitment to serving the Dominican Republic diaspora and strengthening bilateral ties between the two Caribbean nations.
Speaking on his priorities, Mr Mateo Baez described Antigua and Barbuda as a valued partner and praised the country’s people as hardworking and dedicated. He said he was encouraged by the longstanding relationship between the two countries and urged Dominican nationals living in Antigua and Barbuda to act as positive ambassadors for their homeland.
He also called on members of the Dominican community to uphold high standards of conduct and to respect the laws of their host country, noting that their behaviour plays a role in shaping international perceptions of the Dominican Republic.
In the coming weeks, the new consul general is expected to pay courtesy calls on senior government officials in St John’s to discuss matters of mutual interest and formally exchange greetings.
His first official engagement will take place on Sunday, when he attends a special service at Holy Family Cathedral to mark the Bridging of Altagracia, a religious and cultural observance significant to the people of the Dominican Republic.
