DOMINICA: Mother and her juvenile daughter granted bail in alkali throwing incident

NATURE ISLE NEWS- The police have slapped four charges on Adama Shillingford and two against her 14-year-old daughter, who is a juvenile.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred in Roseau on April 4, 2025, involving the mother, her daughter, and other schoolchildren.

She is charged with assault by spraying a liquid substance, namely alkali, in the eyes of a school child (name withheld), armed with an offensive weapon (a knife), aiding and abetting, and battery.

Shillingford appeared before Magistrate Hansel Valaire, where the four summary charges were read to her, and pleaded “not guilty” to all.

Zena Moore Dyer is representing the mother and daughter. The prosecution did not object to bail with a proper surety.

Her 27-year-old son was proposed as surety, and the prosecution questioned how much control he has over his 45-year-old mother in ensuring that she attends her court date.

The Magistrate initially set bail at $15,000.00, but after some pleading from Dyer, he revised it and set it at $10,000.

The matter has been adjourned until July 18, 2025. In the meantime, her daughter, who was also arrested, was slapped with two counts of assault. She was expected to be granted bail and the matter transferred to juvenile family court on April 9, 2025.

Both students, who were affected by the alkali incident and wore dark shades, were present in court dressed in school uniform with their parents.

  1. This is not a crime of passion.
    It was well planned.
Unfortunately for the mother and daughter it was captured on camera.
What justification can a lawyer have for taking sich a case and coming to court to defend the two?
Why would a lawyer chose to come to court and discredit two people who the world saw walking away when they were attacked.
    The lawyer is not broke.
She doesn’t need more money than she has.
Is it greed making lawyers take any and every case?
More than being a lawyer i think she has a conscience.
I think she has already seen the video.
This woman doesnt deserve a lawyer to defend her. Lawyers you need to know the crime before you chose to defend someone.
As I said before this is not a crime of passion.
