The Bishop of Roseau, Gabriel Malzaire, has called on “those responsible to move with some alacrity” to deal with the issue of electoral reform as Dominicans get ready to vote in a general election constitutionally due early next year.
The head of the Roman Catholic Church here said that electoral reform seems to be of concern to many in Dominica, especially in recent times.
Last month, the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) staged street demonstrations that the police described as unlawful in support of electoral reform and the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has already written to the Electoral Commission calling for urgent action on the matter.
Bishop Malzaire told the Roman Catholic congregation the issue of electoral reform “is a long standing issue which is impacting and affecting our society.
“It is imperative therefore that those responsible move with some alacrity to see that all is put in place for the appearance of free and fair general election which is due this year.
“Brothers and sisters we are duty bound to do all in our power to maintain a just and peaceful society. We must seek as a people to transcend party political interest and work for the good of all citizens in our beloved country”.
The Roman Catholic Bishop said Dominicans must allow themselves to be “guided always by truth and seek justice for all.
“All the parties involved are duty bound to present a viable proposal for good governance for the sake of the common and greater good in our country. Today is no doubt a good day to make appropriate resolutions in that regard,” he added.
General elections were held on December 8, 2014 with the incumbent Dominica Labour Party (DLP) winning 15 of the 21 seats despite losing three seats.
