Doctors Protest Over Unpaid December Salaries

12

UPDATE:

The Antigua Newsroom article on January 6, 2020 fundamentally misrepresents the reality at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC). All salaries were paid on time by the hospital. Further, at no time during the period stated was there any industrial action being taken by hospital physicians. It is unfortunate that MSJMC’s Communications Office was not contacted prior to publication of such an impactful article containing the barest of details.
MSJMC places a high value on the care provided to the community and it is important that the assertions made in the article are addressed with the relevant facts. We are therefore requesting a retraction of this article.
The MSJMC Communications Office remains available to assist with pertinent matters regarding the medical centre.
EARLIER REPORT

Doctors at the Mount St. John Medical Centre are reportedly engaged in an industrial action in the form of a go-slow, which is adversely affecting patients and their relatives.

The reason for the protest, according to physicians on duty, was because of unpaid December salaries.

While the Government has claimed that all public-sector workers were paid early to enable them to shop for Christmas, employees from several departments, including the Ministry of Public Works, had still not been paid at the end of the year.

A young mother who took her child in to see a doctor complained that she has been waiting for five hours.

She also shared that a fellow patient suffering from high temperature left the waiting room and went home, but came back later to seek help. She alleges that the woman eventually passed out, then was accused, by a nurse, of “faking it” in an attempt to get attention in a timely manner.

Apart from the waiting period being ‘ridiculous’ as she described, the young mother also complained that the department was short-staffed.

  1. The govt needs to look into the interest of the Doctors at MSJMC. Their salaries are very meager and it is extremely unfair to them, who spend 7 yrs of studying and also being our primary health care takers, that they are treated with such contempt & disrespect….. Yes they are young but doctors play a very critical part in our system…. They are human beings like you the politicians…. They have their own expenses…. Some have not even completed paying off their student loans….. The govt need to treat the doctors at MSJMC alot better than that. Let us not forget that every action always bring about a reaction………

  2. Imagine Fucking this!!! ‘DOCTORS’ “GOING SLOW” because they haven’t been paid for ONE (1) MONTH… This job is suppose to be a ‘PASSION’ and not an ‘AGREEMENT’.

    What a travesty!!! smh

P.S: They should all be paid off and sent home tbh

    • WHY do you (WOKE) have to use profanity instead of civil discussion? The use of profanity nullifies your point, and people wonder about those who have so little respect for themselves. Just askin’ ?

    • I’m wondering why you are so mean toward our doctors. We have wonderful doctors, and we are blessed to have them. They need to e paid on time, of course. We don’t want to lose them.

  3. The Best Comment is No comment..so I will leave this here. This is a very sore spot for me

  4. @CErmle, you need to check out the posts on “Man shaken up after being robbed while on a date”.. I don’t understand why you cant have a civil conversation or argument to be hashed out without the usage of Bad Words

  5. Yes we are living in a democratic country…. So yes, we do have freedom of speech…. However, we should be mature & responsible with we what say…… Using profanity clearly indicates that your vocabulary is extremely low…… ANR should not have such irresponsible posts, posted. IT IS EMBARRASSING & DISTATEFUL to say the least!!

  6. Am told there is/was no go slow.
The use of expletives does not equate to poor vocab.
Some doctors at hospital are paid VERY well. Interns get the least. Some doctors get paid nicely to be yes men.
    Am going back to bed.
