(AFP) — A Venezuelan court has sentenced a doctor to 30 years in prison for criticising Nicolas Maduro’s government in a WhatsApp audio message, rights groups told AFP on Monday.
Marggie Orozco, 65, was given the maximum sentence for “treason, incitement to hatred, and conspiracy” after community leaders reported her for what was perceived to be a disloyal message.
Neither the contents of the message nor its intended recipient were made known.
Orozco was arrested in the western town of San Juan de Colon in August 2024 as Venezuela was gripped in crisis following Maduro’s reelection, which the opposition and dozens of nations dismissed as fraudulent.
His disputed victory claim led to protests that resulted in 2,400 arrests, though most were released within months.
Following the protests, Maduro urged supporters to report “fascists” — a term often used for members of the opposition.
According to Venezuela’s JEP rights NGO, Orozco has suffered two heart attacks while being detained.
The NGO Foro Penal says there are about 882 “political prisoners” in Venezuelan jails.

When I read things like this and it is true, I get more upset at our ignorant leaders in Antigua and Barbuda who are defending leaders like Maduro. It only shows how incompetent and corrupt our local government is.

You are the one who first reference GB in your comments as to the fact that he’s not a dictator. Well I’m directly disagreeing with. I agree that luckily for us we do not live in a system that allows dictatorship, but that does not exonerate these men like GB and the Trump.
They have the same bullying attitude in their way of leadership. So I was merely rebutting your claim that these are good men.
I back the American system of it’s constitutional, not to the Donald or GB..if these men didn’t have those obstacles in their way, they would be silencing people the same way.

@Carlos I just took a day to do my own thing. This article don’t really have enough information to come to a full opinion and I remember correctly Cuba medical missions are apart of school but unsure, also I know know any of the facts you claim to reply.
USSR is dead but Putin and other former USSR counties are probably more true to the depiction of the USSR than what the USSR did, and North Korea doesn’t really have the same ideology since they claim not be Marxist but follow Juche ideology which to be fair they are doing pretty well considered all they had to deal with after being bomb to nothing like Gaza today during the Korean war, infertile soil again as a result of the bombs and very little resources which is mostly what I look at in other mostly and it’s not limited to countries that claims to be socialist I just favour this ideology since I believe it creates the least amount of inequality and allow people to have fair opportunity and freedom to not be forced to live a certain way because of lack of money which can limit peoples education.
