Disability Advocates Welcome Dropped Charges Against Elderly Man, Call for Police Reform

The Antigua and Barbuda Association of Persons with Disabilities (ABAPD) has welcomed the dismissal of criminal charges against 82-year-old Stedman ‘Scottie’ Scotland, following public outrage over his treatment by police. Scotland, who has a history of brain injury, was seen in a widely circulated video being forcibly handled by officers over an alleged parking violation.

ABAPD President Bernard Warner praised the court’s decision, emphasizing the need for justice and better police training on engaging with individuals with disabilities. The police have since launched an internal investigation, while advocates continue pushing for reforms to prevent similar incidents.
