Did you know reparations have already been paid for chattel slavery, just to the wrong people?
The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 made provisions for £20 million (the modern day equivalent of between £2.1 billion and £17 billion by various estimates) to be paid to enslavers for loss of “property”. The loan which was taken out to pay this compensation was only repaid in 2015.
Descendants of the enslaved have received nothing, despite continuous calls for repair.
The fight for reparatory justice continues today.
