The government is still finalizing the selection of deputy heads for the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority and the National Parks Authority, as Cabinet continues to review both internal and external candidates for the key posts.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed during Thursday’s post-Cabinet press briefing that discussions on the appointments are ongoing. “Cabinet is still reviewing possible candidates,” he said. “A search for suitable individuals from within and also outside of those institutions is being carried out.”
The deputy roles are considered vital to strengthening leadership and operational oversight within the two major public institutions. The National Parks Authority manages several heritage and tourism sites, while the Port Authority oversees the country’s maritime gateways — both critical to Antigua and Barbuda’s economy.
No specific timeline has been provided for the appointments, but Merchant emphasized that the government is committed to identifying capable and experienced professionals to ensure strong administrative continuity and effective governance.

Ruleta Camacho was appointed twice by Cabinet as Deputy Parks Commissioner at National Parks and the PS to this date has never confirmed her appointment. Gaston needs to fix his incompetent Civil Service first. No government can go forward with an incompetent civil service. If it can’t be fixed, dismantle it and come up with a different structure. The inherited old colonial system is broken. Years ago, St. Lucia went outside the Civil Service and brought in qualified persons to be PS’s. What happens when departments refuse to follow directions of Cabinet? Another example is Immigration. Cabinet makes and announces decisions and Immigration ignores those directives. And nothing happens. And that is the story in every ministry. The tail is wagging the dog.
