Source- Real News Antigua: Franz deFreitas, the United Progressive Party (UPP) caretaker for St. John’s City South, remains unswayed by the recent offer from the prime minister to donate his monthly salary in support of the upcoming fourth United Nations Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Conference.
Anticipated to draw hundreds, including over 50 heads of government and state officials, to Antigua and Barbuda in May 2024, this significant international gathering has prompted Prime Minister Gaston Browne to pledge his salary to ensure its success.
While some viewed this gesture skeptically, suggesting it’s merely a facade as the prime minister would likely recoup his expenses through other means, deFreitas dismisses it as a tactic often employed by autocrats and corrupt leaders.
According to deFreitas, such actions are designed to create an illusion of benevolence, but they do little to address the systemic issues facing Antigua and Barbuda under the current leadership.
Rather than symbolic gestures, deFreitas argues that real progress would come from Browne relinquishing power to facilitate genuine prosperity and alleviate the people’s suffering, effectively redirecting the nation’s resources for their benefit.
DeFreitas also contrasts Browne’s gesture with the past actions of former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, who, in solidarity with the people, substantially reduced his housing allowance during his tenure, along with his Cabinet taking a salary cut.
This, she emphasizes, was not mere symbolism but a tangible demonstration of the UPP’s commitment to prioritizing the needs of the people.
Additionally, there’s speculation that high-end vehicles rented for certain conference delegates may be sourced from members of the Cabinet, further fueling concerns about transparency and accountability within the government.

Don’t understand why the PM contribution is an issue. A number of participating countries are making monetary contribution towards the conference. Are they tyrants and kleptocrats ? Are you for real. Absolute nonesense.
SHUT you damn mouth. Hon. Gaston Brownei is an honest GIVER. Any person who steals from the collection plate will rotten in hell. Any person who works for minimum wage after spending his life in USA should shut up.
BRIXTONIAN should find a job and stop supporting the THIEVES .
As I said earlier @ City South, ANR threads are for patriotic Antiguan warrior. BTW, do you also dye your hair like the ABLP posse?

@ City South
ANYONE WHO STEALS US$1,000,000 OF POOR PEOPLE HURRICANE RELIEF FUNDS IS NOT HONEST, BUT A COMMON TIEF
Franz is a thief? Don’t you know that we have a serial thief amongst us? He attempted to capitalize on the plight of the victims of a hurricane some 6 1/2 years ago but was stopped in his track and we heard that he took money on behalf of the same broken souls from a sympathetic European Nation and was called out too. I never hear Franz dodging anyone and ignoring their calls to avoid giving up millions of dollars that don’t belong to him. You people are real fools.
