Franz deFreitas, the United Progressive Party (UPP) Candidate for St. John’s City South, is expressing concern about voter fraud in the upcoming general elections.
DeFreitas says there have been reports of voter-stacking in the constituency, where Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin is the incumbent Antigua Labour Party (ALP) representative.
Accordingly, the UPP Candidate is encouraging persons to contact him and report any evidence of this type of activity.
DeFreitas says his team has canvassed St. John’s City South and has discovered some inconsistencies being facilitated by landlords.
The UPP representative says he is hoping to challenge any illegality in the courts to prevent voter fraud.
Further, deFreitas says he has been made aware of instances in previous elections in which persons voted by assuming the identities of dead people.
Elections are constitutionally due in Antigua and Barbuda in 2023, but Prime Minister Gaston Browne has hinted there will be early polls once again. (REAL NEWS)

Perhaps because he is new, he may be excused, but we have something called a claim and objection period. The list with new constituents is publicly displayed, for period of time and its within that time (about 21 days) persons must lodge objections, if any. Note these should be legitimatize objection not something based on for eg, a dream, or something you heard that you can’t backup. These objections need to be made to the registration officer in the affected constituency. A hearing would then occur if warranted. Tenman I have heard stories that once the person gets on the list it’s virtually impossible to get them off. This is because the person objecting must prove that the person don’t reside at the address, as opposed to the person providing proof that they live at a particular address.
The big question for the UPP candidate is what kind of weak scrutinizers they have in these registration offices?
Yep, the deed is done once they are on the final list. No court touching that. Telling thing is you can’t even register when a UPP or ALP scrutinizer takes a lunch break. Locals like me have to show we have lived in the constituency for 6 months (law changed just before the 2014 elections) vs overseas Antiguan’s (eg CIP people) 30 days
So Gaston is going to register all CIP passport holders to vote? There should be at lease 100,000 of them when you hear of the large proceeds from CIP. Do the math. Guess some people have houses in Jolly Harbour which can be used as their abode.

What’s telling is it was this alleged fear why the UPP amended the act before the 2014 elections and made a unconstitutional change. They changed it so that persons who lived in A&B have to prove residency in a constituency of 6 months formerly it was 30 days. However for A&B persons who lived abroad (eg. the now over 6K CIP recipients), they only need show 30 days. UPP, just can’t stop shooting itself in the foot
