Defence Force hosts outreach at Fiennes Institute

On Monday 29th, The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force continued to celebrate its 41st anniversary by showing our gratitude towards the elderly who resides at the Fiennes Institute.

This Institute was established in 1929 by His Excellency Lieutenant Sir. Eustace Fiennes, the Governor of the Leeward Islands.

It was established at that time to solely provide a home for our senior citizens here in Antigua and Barbuda who did not have the means to maintain and care for themselves.

It has out lived its original purpose and now functions as an Elderly Health Care Facility.

Before ABDF began the scheduled engagements in the activities, Mr. Eugene Paul, who currently resides at Fiennes Institute, was interviewed by one of our own. Mr. Paul joined the Antigua Barbuda Defence Force at about 18 years of age; he mentioned that he was on the first batch of soldiers to travel to assist our neighboring Caribbean Country Grenada. On 25th October 1983, it was said that Grenada along six other Caribbean nations were invaded.

The ABDF honored our senior citizens by showing appreciation. We empowered them to continue living a full and healthy life. Our medics checked their blood pressure; we donated items that are needed for everyday use.

A display by the steel band orchestra was considered as a means of entertaining to them.

Lastly, we had the opportunity to socialize with them by taking the opportunity to feed them and styling/plaiting a few of female elderly’s hair.

The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force will continue to aid in humanitarian relief operations and will continue to promote regional peace.
