Excessive Heat Warning Issued for Antigua and Barbuda

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued an excessive heat warning, cautioning residents that dangerously hot conditions will persist across the islands through Sunday.

The advisory, in effect daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., warns that the heat index — a measure combining temperature and humidity — could reach 43°C (109°F). Meteorologists said the combination of high temperatures, humidity, and light winds is creating “dangerous heat stress conditions.”

The service classified the risk level as medium but said it could still result in heat cramps, exhaustion, or even heat stroke. Those most vulnerable include the elderly, young children, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and low-income or homeless individuals.

Officials urged residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors, and seek shade or cool areas if feeling unwell. They also reminded the public to call emergency services immediately if signs of heat stroke appear, including confusion, fainting, or dangerously high body temperature.

Updates will be available at antiguamet.com and via the meteorological service’s official social media accounts.
