High seas and winds due to a “powerful and huge low-pressure system covering the Atlantic” is causing disruption to businesses and traffic in the south of the island, as large swells pound the coastline and flood roads.
Roads in the southern part of the island, including in the Crab Hill area, have been rendered impassable because of flooding due to the high waves. Reports from the area have also indicated that several vehicles were stuck attempting to cross the dams of water the weather feature created.
The Met Office had warned that the trough would have caused the high swells which could lead to flooding and massive coastal erosion.
The effects of the high waves can also be seen at Fort James, where seawater has made its way into the roadways as well.
A climatologist from Antigua and Barbuda’s Met Office, Dale Destin said the system also cause damage across sections of the United States because of the storm force winds associated with it.
He said the effects of the weather feature are not only being felt in Antigua and Barbuda but across much of the Northern Caribbean.
Destin said that the swells “could cause issues with cruise ships exiting and entering ports” so it would not be surprising if the rough seas have caused disruption to cruise ships.
Destin said another sigh of the weather feature is the country experiencing westward wind flow instead of the instead of the east as is normally the case.
The occurrence has cause flights taking off from the VC Bird International Airport to change the orientation of their takeoff.
