Young national cyclist Jomari King is recovering in hospital after being struck by a vehicle during a morning ride in Collins.

King, who was cycling with two others, sustained injuries and is awaiting X-ray results at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

His condition is stable, and he remains conscious and responsive, according to his father, fellow cyclist Omari King.

Police say the driver fled the scene, but witnesses managed to record the vehicle’s license plate.

  1. Why alert the perpetrator that his/her license plate number has been recorded? That may make investigation that much more difficult.
Only the police and the ones who recorded the numbers should be aware until after the perpetrator has been caught.
I wish Jomarie a speedy recovery.

  2. @ Joan
It’s just strategy, they are trying to get him to turn himself in, he isn’t certain whether or not the vehicle was identified. So right now his brain is addled

  3. Sorry to hear about young Jomari. I hope he gets better soon. So happy nothing very serious happened.
I hope they get the driver. Maybe he panicked and ran, but he has had enough time to come forward and own up to the knockdown.
One word to the young cyclists. I use the road a lot and I see them practicing all the time. That is a good look.
One very bad look is how they sometimes use the roads. They ride like two and three abreast on roads that are mostly not good. They sometimes refuse to move to the edge of the road and they do not respond to the car horn.
Some of them are full of swagger and believe the road is theirs because they are hotshots on bikes.
Frankly I am surprised that we have not had more accidents with our cyclists. They need to practice more on less travelled roads and to be more careful and ride more sensible.
Our roads are not suitable for competitive cyclists.
