CXC to Pilot Modular Mathematics Exams in 2026
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) will introduce a modular system for mathematics assessments from June 2026, in a move officials say could transform learning across the region, including Antigua and Barbuda.
Under the pilot scheme, the syllabus will be divided into three modules, each assessed separately from third to fifth form. Students must pass each stage before progressing, with the final consolidated grade awarded at the end of fifth form.
Dr Myrick Smith, CXC’s local registrar, described the initiative as an “innovative approach” designed to boost student performance without reducing academic standards.

Currently, students sit a single comprehensive exam at the end of fifth form, which determines their overall grade. The new system will allow schools and families to choose between the modular or traditional format once the trial is completed.
“The goal is to improve outcomes in mathematics,” Dr Smith said. “This approach gives students a better chance at success.”

My only concern is how teachers will adapt. If the system isn’t properly explained or supported, it could create confusion
This sounds like a smart move. Too many students get overwhelmed by one big exam at the end. Breaking it down could ease the pressure.
“Manageable segments that will be tested separate” I really and truly think this will be best and ogre well for everyone involved. Let’s wait and see how this plays out
I prefer the traditional system because sometimes students are without a teacher between 3rd and 5th form. In those cases testing them during third and fourth forms will put them at a disadvantage.
