Customs Comptroller Raju Boddu Resigns, Citing Health Reasons

30

Comptroller of Customs Raju Boddu has resigned from his post, ending his long tenure as head of the Customs and Excise Division.

Sources say Boddu submitted his resignation earlier this week, citing health reasons in his letter. The move has surprised many within the department and sparked speculation about an ongoing internal investigation.

Boddu, a seasoned customs administrator, has spent several years in Antigua and Barbuda, where he became known for his firm approach to enforcement and efforts to modernize customs operations.

Authorities have not yet announced who will assume the role in an acting capacity pending a formal appointment.

Is it true?

Is it true that the Comptroller of Customs, Raju Boddu, has quietly packed his bags and resigned?
Is it true that he has already “left” Antigua — without so much as a public word or a farewell handshake?
Is it true that the hunt is now on for his replacement, though no one seems eager to say why?

Is it true that opposition MPs are sharpening their questions for Parliament — ready to ask what really went down at Customs?
And is it true, whispered in corridors and over coffee, that certain “irregularities” were unearthed — the kind that make people nervous and paperwork disappear?

Because if it is true… then silence, it seems, has a lot to declare.

  1. I am calling on the Hon Jamale Pringle as head of the Public Accounts Committee to have a full audit done on all vehicles Bonds in Antigua. Covering the period 6 months before the 2023 general elections to present. Paying particular attention to concessions granted. Requesting all customs documents pertaining to the exbond of the these vehicles from such bonds.

  2. If true, is anyone really surprised?

Boddu comes over as a very distant official in a very important position. You rarely here a lot from him, unless it is to back the government to the hilt whatsoever.

Boddu sites health issues, but how come all of a sudden?! The cynic in me smells something fishy.

In recent times a handful of Antiguan politicians and senior officials have stepped away from their duties after a gradual decline in serious illness (which is totally understandable), however Boddu’s sudden departure needs to be thoroughly investigated to find out that’s there’s nothing else afoot or at play.

    Again, I hope I’m wrong …

  3. We will probably never know the real reasons behind this hasty resignation and officialdom will issue a sweet mello press release in order to soften the blow.

  4. Stupid people say stupid things. Where does it gives the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee any authority to conduct an audit into a government department. Only the Director of Audit can do such a thing.
So stupid people stop saying stupid things please

  5. I too want this proposed audit to come out indeed but why only “the period 6 months before the 2023 general elections to present”?

The shit that is happening at the port AND in customs has been going on for DECADES….long before ABLP and even duting the UPP tenure. It has continued under different parties unchecked and involves many many many customs officers.

We want it all out in the open but we have to be careful what we wish for…..
We only want something when it affects the party that we DO NOT support, but when the party that we support is implicated….we run away.

We can’t have our cake and not want to eat it too!

  7. @hungry.
To your dismay..do you know that there are a lot of people out here that doesn’t benefit financially from either party, and are very neutral in their stance on corruption?

So when you say ” mind what we ask for” are you implying that the entirety of the Antigua business public is corrupted?

Well let me give you some hope..we the Neutral free thinking people are asking for an audit into this present government. They are the ones who have lead the country since 2014 and into the big mess that we are in. They are the ones who have very little transparency about their nefarious dealings. Like how did a sitting MP got murdered in his own house?

What about the Antigua Airways scandal, or are you forgetting that one? What did we ask for, transparency, but all we got was a run around in circles with them claiming they got “duped”.

And the Lait deal..well all now we don’t even know who actually owns lait,we the people or a corrupt Nigerian?

And the list is endless in these recent times. The previous commissioner even bolted right after Asot got killed..are you telling me that all these things are coincidences?

The last five years have been hell for Antigua, and someone has to pay, simple.

So we, the neutral people who do not have any money in the fight, are asking for an audit..is that ok with you?

But continue with your deflections, because that solves nothing.

  8. @Hungry for Cake – I was going to address some of the nonsense. Some of them cannot help their political self. These things have been happening since time memorial. A ONLY hope when the audit is done y’all won’t get a heart attack.

  9. Put an Antiguan in this position please trust me they are intelligent and has the experience especially those who has higher education let them see the degrees not in vain especially here in Antigua we don’t value ppl education just the good old boys games

  10. @Hungry for cake…

  11. Mr. Badoo is a decent man, but the system is corrupt.
The next comptroller will have to be vetted by the the Syrian and Black Hadeed first to ensure he or she complies…

  12. That’s a different ethnicity with different discipline, if the comptroller of customs was a black man he would a hang on to power inside the customs there, even if he had a drip bag medically connected to him, you can observe it with Robin , Cutie and Molwyn. They not vacating power regardless of what.

  13. @Islanman26

Why do you only want an audit for this present government? If an audit or any investigation is to be done would we not want everything and everyone regardless of political affiliation to be held accountable?

Why would you state these things?

“So we, the neutral people who do not have any money in the fight, are asking for an audit..is that ok with you?”

“But continue with your deflections, because that solves nothing.”

When I read the initial comment, I didn’t read it as any deflection at all. The author is correct. This is Antigua. Everybody knows everything and we want it all to come out.

I think maybe you should go back and read the comment again but take off your political blinders and put on the “neutral” one.

  14. The entire Cusoms is corrupt. And government after government has done nothing. How can Customs Officers working for $3,000 a month be owning apartment buildings and million dollar homes? And bare face with it? Where is ONDCP? Where is FSRC? Where is the Integrity Commissioner? The corruption in this country is interested twined and inter mixed. And politicians from both political parties are involved. So that means nothing will change. The PM was told last week by one of the leading families as stated by the PM last Saturday, that if he messes with them and investigates they will throw their millions behind the UPP. They did that once before. When they throw millions behind election campaigns they then call the shots. Let’s not be surprised. We have seen this movie before but we the stupid and ignorant people love it so. We love handouts as the late Asot proved.

  15. @Neutrality.
No, Gatson Browne knows everything, and he does nothing. So let’s get that corrected!

He is the leader at the moment, so who you want me to point at.. isn’t he the one who hired all these outsiders?
And when the UPP campaign against it, you’ll say that they hate foreigners.

Investigate anyone you want, I really don’t care who fall, but someone has to fall for the mess we have. Look at the past 5 years, and that should tell you who should be investigated. All these scandals are directly under the leadership of Gatson Brown.

Prosecutors fight cases they can win, and I’m sure there is enough evidence out there are to why Asot got killed..
So, Gatson Brown who knows everything and talk it brawling on his Radio show, should be the one who dig up all this dirt and prosecute, but he doesn’t because he knows he got the most to lose.

So their have it..and that’s as neutral as it gets.
Because my neutrality was only in reference to not having any dirt in the game, not which political party is to my liking.
So get it right before you respond.

  16. The Custom Department has been plagued with corrupt officers for ever since. One would remember the Comptroller Mr. Samuel who died a terrible death. And what the police found was a web of porno and sex tapes with little boys. Thereafter we heard nothing for a while. To me Mr. Brown was one of the better Comptrollers. Firm as he was, I had great pleasure working with him. Sometimes sitting and waiting untill the late hours the day going into the night for him to approve my duty free warrants as per Cabinet Decision. And you better make sure everything is on the list that was approved. Then we had the awful execution of Mr. Christian whom until this day we are not sure what he was killed for. The Port is our main Income Stream, next to the taxes paid at IRD. Boddu waas hired under he UPP IMF program to sort out the corruption for us. And he did so in many instances. He get to love this country and made it his new home. But that is with many foreigners that come here. Given his expertise and his pecibale integrity he was the perfect man for the job. Whether we like to hear this or not, Antiguans and Barbudans ar too incestuous. We are so close related that some women do not need to change their maiden name when they get married. Everyone is realated somehow. If they are not related by blood they are related by church religion. Many are God Father or God Mother of so many children. Or they have been to the same school at one point in their life. It is therefore very hard to find an Antihguan and Barbudan for jobs such as these for people to be firm and have the highest integrity. Even in the police force we see the same situation. Reason why many commissioners were from the other Island. As they saying goes,”Blood is thicker then water”.
I hope we get to know the complete story of what is going on here. We the people need to have trust in the system. And if a public enquiry is needed, let it be so. But I hold Mr. Boddu is high regards unless proven otherwise. We must stop protecting the people in high places. We did that with the ABI Bank banckrupcy. We did that with then John Ash investigation. But we throw the little man in jail for stealing an apple. The the chit fall where they may.

  17. I can recall many years ago the long lines at the airport where people paid to leave the country, but the receipts were not matching up to the tourists/travellers visiting the Antigua – those in power and authority knew this.

This obvious fraudulent practice had to stop.

And here we are in October 2025, and we still have questions about the “alleged” conduct within customs.

Dear Lord please take the wheel from evil doers 🙏🏾

  18. What has transpired at the ports, came to light many, many moons ago and is still happening (the alleged, corruption) is DIRECTLY and INDELIBLY linked to the recent surge in gun crimes. How else would would guns be making their way into the hands of teenagers, some of whom never even left Antigua.
Drugs and other contrabands create the same problems because guns and drugs are Siamese twins joined at the head.
The ironic thing about this developing monster of a blob, it’s the comparison to the UPP & ALP/ABLP as both being responsible for the mess.
Ok! They are both guilty as hell. So where, what point in time should the INDEPENDENT FORENSIC AUDITING begin?
How about it begins, at the point in time when Mr. Rolls Royce Over The Fence, a current Member of Parliament who was so bold and audacious, just like those alleged crooks now under investigation, that they break the ‘law’ with little to no repercussions.
So,drop the #Chamil_Net and #Drag_Net at this point, let the net(s) out to surround the Customs and which ever Ministry’s it fell under during that time.
Now have the People haul up the nets like they’re pull #SEINE, we’ll be pleasantly surprised, as to what we pull in; from sharks to sting ray to hedge hog to some sweet yellow tail snapper!

    I know, wishful thinking on a #story_board!
But add these to the compromised law enforcement agency’s, thus could rival The Mena Connection and The Iran Contra Affair.
