"Let's choose compassion over indifference. Every kind word and gesture can uplift someone struggling. Together, we can create a world where mental health is prioritized and celebrated. 💚 #MentalHealthDay #ChooseKindness"

Mental Health Day Message by Peetron Thomas (Humanitarian, Singer and Author)

One of the most significant reasons we continue to see an increase in mental health crises is the lack of care and sensitivity in how we treat others. Far too often, we fail to recognize the weight of our words, our actions, and our responses. Some people face minor struggles, while others endure greater battles within themselves. But no matter the scale, every experience matters. It is crucial for us to be a more compassionate and empathetic society, understanding that not everyone has the strength to withstand harsh words or emotions.

I, too, have had my share of mental health challenges, battling anxiety and depression. At times, I’ve felt overwhelmed because of the hurt caused by others. But I want to encourage those who are struggling—especially with anxiety and depression—don’t give up on yourself. Even when it feels like the world is against you, keep trying. Don’t let yourself stop you. You are unstoppable. Be resilient, be strong, and remember that every day you have is an opportunity to live with joy. Don’t let anyone steal your happiness, and don’t allow the pressures of this world to compromise your peace. We need to stop centering ourselves in our interactions and begin to accept that mental health is a vital part of our collective well-being. From those in positions of power to those under their leadership—parents to children, teachers to students, supervisors to workers—mental health should be addressed with respect, understanding, and love. The ease with which we handle situations is not what’s important; it’s the care and thoughtfulness in how we respond that makes all the difference.

Today, on Mental Health Day, I urge the people of Antigua and Barbuda—and the world at large—to reflect on the power of love and kindness. Let’s choose to be mindful in our communication, careful with our words, and considerate of the emotional impact we leave on others. By developing a culture of compassion, we can reduce the alarming rates of youth violence, divorce, and mental health challenges that plague our society. Let us choose positive influence, thoughtful gestures, and a spirit of goodwill as the medicine that will strengthen the foundation of mental health in our communities. It starts with each one of us.
