Cruise-ship couple accosted and robbed on Gordon Street, Villa

25

Two cruise-ship passengers returning from a day out were robbed
recently while their vessel was docked in the St. John’s Harbour.

Reports say that the couple – natives of Scotland who were traveling
on board the Valiant – went to the Heritage Quay police outpost
and reported that they had been robbed by a young man on Gordon
Street in Villa.

This incident reportedly occurred on February 15 at about 2 p.m.

It is alleged that the pair were heading back to their ship when a
man accosted and attempted to rob them.

However, the Scottish woman refused to relinquish her bag and a
struggle ensued.

The robber then allegedly threatened to kill them, at which time
they surrendered the bag, which contained two bank cards from
their native country; a Chase bank card; a Revalut bank card; and a
United Kingdom driver’s license.

The robber then made good his escape in an easterly direction.

Officers conducted a search of the surrounding areas for the suspect
and the stolen bag but found neither.

  1. Stupid is as stupid does. What does he think he will be able to do with 2 bank cards and a passport? They should have put some licks on him. Let the tourists visit in peace and go look for work. I hope the police increases their presence on the streets.

  2. Criminals in this country know the police don’t patrol the roads, they commit their crimes and know that by the time you can find a police officer, they can be all the way to Barbuda and beyond

  3. I have often watched these visitors to our shores walking to our beaches and prayed for them. Not that walking is not a good form of exercise but it is where they are choosing or have been advised to walk.
I have been on a cruise with a stop in Puerto Rico and chose to take a bus to a Fort in Old San Juan. Not sure I remember the name but I think is was Fort Morro anyway, after me and my companion had walked around the Fort we decided to explore Old San Juan a little bit. On our way down a hill we encountered two gentlemen who advised us to not go in that area. We took their advice and turned around and walked back to where we would get on the bus again. That particular area we were told was notorious for robberies.
Now that is not to say that we have areas here like that but we know that in certain areas we have criminal elements. Tourists do not always want to listen when locals try to warn them away from certain areas.
This is such a sad occurrence to have marred their visit. I hope their personal belongings are found and if possible forensic evidence can point law enforcement in the right direction to catch these/this perpetrator.

    • @ Joan, if you had one brain 🧠 cell you’d be a danger to yourself.

Mercy, I had to read what you said twice, and I’m totally flummoxed as to why you still hit the SEND button to ANR.

  4. Wait man, non a dem big belly pigs for a police aint deh closeby drinking beers by non a dem spanish bar in that area to see wah gwaan, police alwys in that area drinkin beers and park off side the road and dem be inna uniform too.
Wait, maybe the police dem was playing pools…..maybe thats why, the game been done start.

  5. things like these will let tourist never want to visit again smh this isn’t good for the country at all imagine coming to visit an have a good time an someone rob you now these ppl dnt have access to money how will they survive till go back I bet they won’t return again because if it was me I wouldn’t return here,I feel so bad for them hope they getting emotionally support

  6. I realize these thieves don’t understand what damage they’re causing, giving this country a horrible name where tourism is concerned. Once in a while we’ll hear about visitors being robbed but it’s now a regular thing. I’m looking forward to hear a visitor clap some licks or gun shot to the foot on one of these thieves. Then I guess we’ll give the visor wud hmm 🤔

  7. One thing you can guarantee folks, you won’t hear a word from the three MOUSEKETEERS, the Police Commissioner Attlee Rodney; Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin; and our out of sorts nutcracker, Gaston Browne.

Mind you, with the recent crimes against tourists, I’d love to know Max ‘Soon Na Deya’ Fernández thoughts. Hmmm 🤔

  8. And when the tourists don’t come, what then for Antigua? What will happen to their family who work in tourism. People so stupid, they scare away the money

    • When the ships decline to port in Antigua then it will turn into the wild west where everyday citizens will not be able to walk the streets. This is what the country need because the police and commissioners allow crime to run rampant on locals so now it’s the tourists turn to feel the pain. The law makers and the police allow young people to freely commit crimes and give them a staycation at 1735 and they are back out on the streets doing the same again or worse. I remember when tourists felt secured to walk to fort and come back, now the cruise ships will be give the tourists warning not to walk in certain areas. True shame, how to cripple the country. lol smh

  9. I guess we’re jealous of the Bahamas for getting the US attention by getting on the travel advisory list. We already don’t have that much to offer the tourist, if they don’t get off those ships then what? Why protection of our product not at the top of the agenda. Our beaches with sand theft and building out city rundown and dirty and now tourists getting assaulted.

  10. @joan..I call a spade a spade.. are you that dumb? Putting the emphasis on the tourist, instead of your lax administration of A&B, namely the commissioner, the AG, and the great leader of Antigua and Barbuda, gots to be the most disingenuous nonsense I’ve ever read on this forum.

It is for them, the government, to do their damn job, Miss Joan, it’s for them to put security in places that they know crimes are rampant, for both the security of our citizens and not just the tourist that walk the streets of Antigua.

Freedom of movement is paramount for any person that’s on this earth, so you can’t sit there and say that someone should not go such and such place, especially if they are visitors to your country and building your economy!!!

So go tell the Government of PR and A&B to go eradicate these so-called ” bad places and people” from our society, so we can walk freely on our streets.

You insinuating that it’s for the tourist to know where to go and not to, is solely their responsibility, has got to be the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard. (Even though you sound halfway educated)

  11. I agree with 98% of these comments. Tourists, like me, have stopped visiting your beautiful island because of instances like this and it’s only going to get worse. Don’t put them in jail put them in a work program to experience how the real world lives and makes a living everyday. No need to pay them it’s what they’re giving back that’s important, ya right eh.
Friends we travel with just got back from 2 weeks vacation on the island and like us they have been there many, many times…..they will not return.

  12. Once upon a time, local criminals knew better than to target tourists. Now they don’t care if they ruin the country’s main industry. When that is gone, everyone will be broke and they won’t get any money from such criminal activities. So, it is foolish of them to drive the tourists away. Can’t blame tourists for wanting to leave. I’m a local and the way things are going I’d happily move to any decent, peaceful country that would let me. I hope we can find a way to reverse all of this before it’s too late.

  13. What do you folks expect?
Legalizing marijuana to get the youth vote; and creating a generation of thugs while the Police and the drug agency have no clue what to do.

Now they are ready to blame it on the parents; soon it will be the teachers Abd when Thad teachers say: not me!
They will blame it on the neighbors

All the big shots to busy enriching themselves, and in the mean time have no clue what to do to address the problem.
The powers that be, will announce record arrivals; until the day vacationers decide there are safer alternatives to Antigua. Then the opposition will blame the opposition.

  14. @Islanman26 @Brixtonian …..you people criticize Joan’s opinion like its fundamentally wrong, like you ppl live in fairy land where everything is milk and honey….I can guarantee some of you instinctively do not drive or walk through certain areas in antigua but acting as if its imperative for tourists to. Yes I understand A&B security should be effective enough to advocate freedom but open your eyes.

    • So @ Preme, my critique of Joan gives you major GIP, but the inactions of the Police Commissioner, Attorney General, and the Prime Minister in the rising crime wave doesn’t?

      Are you ok?

  15. Notice most of the crimes these days happen in the PM constituency? Down there is becoming more and more like Sodom and Gomorrah.
The idiots who voted for this ABLP must be soooo proud.

  16. Poor antigua!
My heart is filled with sadness!
This government does not care at all!
The police commisoner does absolutely nothing to stem the prevalence of this crime wave!!
We really get a government we deserve😢

  17. Lawlessness. From top to bottom. A man who will stand trial for fraud is attorney General; the top cop is never home, racking up frequent flyer miles while MIA; and the idiot DAWG gets on his Rumshop and speaks of driverless cars. BTW, Happy Max Fernandez is silent.
This cuts at the heart of our main revenue source ,other that endless taxes, and it just a matter of time before this bites us where it hurts.
Really, starting with the idiot DAWG, the whole cabinet of hoodlums need to be sacked.
