The Government has taken the initiative to have the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Clerk of Parliament convene via a virtual Parliament on Tuesday morning, March 31, 2020, commencing at 9:30 a.m.
Chief of staff Lionel Hurst reports that this virtual parliamentary meeting will enable the body to meet but not contravene the social-distancing rule which the scientists and doctors advise, in order to stave off the likelihood of contagion easily passed-on by the coronavirus.
Section 59 of the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda allows for the Parliament to be convened wherever the Governor-General declares it to be held.
Hurst added that Amendments and Orders to the Emergency Act and the Quarantine Act are to be debated and passed. The Leader of the Opposition and the Member for Barbuda have been informed, as have the three back benchers, including the Deputy Speaker.
A reduced Senate will meet on Wednesday, April 1, 2020.
