COP26: Countries strike deal with coal compromise

Negotiators at the UN COP26 summit in Glasgow have adopted a new deal on climate action after a last-minute intervention by India to water down the language on slashing emissions from coal.

Several countries including small island states said they were deeply disappointed by the move on Saturday to “phase down,” rather than “phase out” coal power, the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.

“There was a real sense of ambush in the air,” Al Jazeera’s Nick Clark, reporting from the talks, said.
