Community Activist Mary John Ordered to Pay $8,000 for Spreading False Information

13

Justice Ann Marie Smith has ordered community activist Mary John to pay $6,000 in compensation to the woman she spread false information about, plus an additional $2,000 to the state.

John was found guilty after a brief judge-alone trial for spreading false information electronically to cause insult and hatred.

The incident occurred on October 5, 2021, when John posted an image on social media falsely accusing the woman of being the suspected killer of Piccadilly resident Jane Finch.

  1. I hope this is rhe first of many, she loves to tell lies and point fingers at people that have nothing to do with her. She helps a lot of people but, tell ao many lies about others. She need to stop spreading false rumors avout people!

  2. Mary you nah k I still love you and if I have to help I will!! You’re a true GEM a lot of them can’t walk on your shoes!! I’m glad it’s over # 1 supporter

  3. Antigua citizens thanks for the positive note on Mary. In that situation the only thing Mary did wrong was rush to judgement too soon. She was in no way malicious in what happened. Yes she made a mistake, but when she realized her mistake she took down the comment in less than 2 minutes. She immediately apologize profusely to the person and to the public for her mistake. Mary has singularly done more for the interests of the common man, the downtrodden, the forgotten, the neglected, and the marginalized more than any person in Antigua and has done so for 30 plus years. Those of you who dislike her are evil doers yourselves, afraid that when she exposes persons it might reflect on you because you’re doing the same. To the commentators who posted the negatively about her, why don’t you “throw the first stone”!!!! Remember you live in glass houses camouflaged as regular houses. God forbid someone throw stones at “your house”. Mary will rise above this and come out stronger like she always does. “WHO GOD HAS BLESSED, LET NO MAN CURSE”.

  6. This judgement is ridiculous. What does an ordinary person got to do to get justice in this place.

  9. The very best of us err and I know Mary meant no personal harm or ill will. She did acknowledge her error when it happened and quickly sought to correct same and make amends.
This bump in the road would in no way deter her from the remarkable humanitarian work that she has done and continue to do. Her life has been both a personal testimony and a demonstration of how changes can come about if you really want them to happen..
Mary’s past and her present is one of remarkable transformation, courage and strength. We see her love for humanity demonstrated everyday by her tremendous philanthropic effort.
Mary, a bump in the road only delays your progress but will never stop it.
