IS ACCEPTING REFUGEES IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST?
By Yves Ephraim
The issue of the acceptance of “refugees” should be considered carefully by all Antiguans and Barbudans, regardless of the party you support.

We are venturing into the unknown. This move has the potential for negatively changing our way of life, forever!
The timing of the acquiescence of both governments of Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica to accept non-national deportees from the USA is quite unfortunate.
One cannot ignore the fact that all this follows immediately after attempts to reverse US Visa restrictions and the capture of Maduro, where allegations of collusion with other Caribbean leaders were made.
The fact that both governments of Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica are simultaneously speaking on the same “refugees” issue cannot be a coincidence.
In a previous post, I encouraged Antiguans and Barbudans to begin recognizing issues that transcend party politics. We ought to be tuned into issues that can affect all of us negatively. This is what I mean by the national interest.
We like to talk about all of our national songs and how much Antigua and Barbuda means to us. I believe that this is seminal moment in our history.
Are you satisfied to go down a path that has the potential of completely changing our way of life forever and in a very detrimental way?
Do I think that this a bad move?
Yes I do and for the following reasons:
1. It is obvious that the deportees are of no value to the US and their own countries. Convince me that Antigua and Barbuda will not become a dumping ground for these least desirable individuals. Is this not a sure way of becoming what was described as a “SH*T HOLE Country”. If you believed that that moniker did not apply to us now, I can assure you that there is nothing to guarantee that we will not become one.
2. If we sell our birthright now for the privilege of getting a visa, what is there to prevent us not having to concede more of our national dignity when threatened again in the future?
3. It is obvious to me that our government did not voluntarily offer to accept “refugees”. Why would we believe that a “friendly” country would deliberately denying our citizens entry while at the same time expect our country to accept their rejected deportees with open arms. That goes against all sense of fairness and mutual respect.
4. Once we agree to accept these deportees, Antigua and Barbuda immediately throws away any chance of never being regarded as a national security threat to the US, thus giving more reason for permanent visa restrictions.
This “refugees” issue is an existential issue.
This is watershed moment for all Antiguans and Barbudans. Our anthem calls for us to defend Antigua and Barbuda in the words:
Give us strength, faith, loyalty,
Never failing, all enduring
To defend her liberty.
Which Antiguan and Barbudan who cares about the future of his or her children, would accept the notion to willingly allow our nation to become a dumping ground for dubious rejects.
No attempt to soften the dubious character of individuals that will be shipped to us will convince me that his is not a big mistake.
And I have not even considered the economic ramifications by our decision.
I have seen how countries have been destabilized by the forced immigration of peoples of different values and religious beliefs. Take for instance what is happening in the United Kingdom right now with the drastic increase in knife related violence and rapes following the massive influx of “refugees”.
We cannot ignore what recent history is revealing. I think this is bad idea!
If there was ever a matter that was of national interest, this one definitely is!

Believe it or not, we have been accepting refugees from Guyana, Santo Domingo, Jamaica, Dominica, St. Vincent for the past forty years. We call them foreigners not refugees.
We have been and still are accepting Chinese refugees in exchange for Chinese loans and contaminated trinkets. The Serians and Lebanese stacks their Communities with their refugees as well.
And many came with their criminal credentials.
Have no choice government must comply now they wanna remain in good relations and business with the US….Simple….
@Ripley.
Well said. And Donald Trump knows all this and have the CIA briefing on it.
These jokers forgot that the CIA has been right here and watching for years, way before Allen Sanford, and certainly more prudently after they came and snatch him up.
The US embassy not coming here(again) is tied to all that same information gathering by the CIA, so does the visa sanctions.
It’s all tied together with our slack immigration system and our very pourous CIP program.
Trump gathered all the intelligence briefing and is now making his play.
I warned and I’ve warned of this for years, and no one listened, they thought I was just bashing GB.
I have come home about 8 times now after COVID, and each time I came, I saw it blaring in front of me like a truck horn.
The corruption and favoritism in Antigua is as blatant as day light.
I told this story before. I remember having a light conversation with a Cop back in 2022 in Antigua, and jovially told him that I’m coming to take over Antigua(just to get a rise out of him) he seriously turned to me and said ” That will take some serious money” , not that it will take some serious work, but money.
I got my cue as to what he was saying.
This was coming from a sitting police officer mind you.
Well now here we are..2026.
@ Islandnan26
Accepting the refugees is a way for Gaston to get the US Embassy here. This man is as selfish as it gets. He doesn’t give a shit about the people. What is really unfortunate about this is the people doesn’t realize he is using them like toilet paper. Ever hear how Faithful National #1 sings his praises

@Faithful#2
I’ll say this on here, because I know they are reading everything we say.
I know all the players, because I’ve done my homework, and I’m also pure hearted enough to keep out of corruption, so when evil is coming, I see it from a long way off.
But don’t worry with them at the moment..they will be hell bent on proving us wrong, and that’s where they will continue to make their mistakes, why, because evil has no thrown as they may think.
Antigua has reached the cross roads, this is it, and I’m dead serious about this. If they do not choose correctly in the next election, the events of Haiti is on the horizon.
We are as exposed as at anytime in our history, the cat s out the bag,so we better wake up and see where this is going.
GB has dabbled too much, way too much.
He wants a big seat at the big table, but this fool doesn’t know the cost of such a lofty goal.
Sad for Antiguan’s.
